Overview
Zulip on AWS by FOSSonCloud is an open-source AWS CloudFormation template that offers an easy-to-install AWS infrastructure solution for quickly deploying Zulip, using both AWS and Zulip best practices.
Automatically configured to support auto-scaling through AWS Autoscaling Groups, this solution leverages an S3 bucket for user generated content between application servers. It also provisions an ElastiCache Redis cluster for cache, an Amazon MQ RabbitMQ broker for the Zulip queue worker, and an Aurora PostgreSQL cluster for the database. It configures SES with Easy DKIM for emails, and configures Route53 with convenient DNS entries.
The template ensures multi-level security by incorporating AWS IAM for federated access to resources with least privilege and AWS managed keys and Secrets Manager to manage secrets for encryption of data at rest and in transit.
We support multiple availability zones using an RDS Aurora Postgresql cluster and EC2 Auto Scaling Groups.

Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you choose to run this Zulip deployment. There is no per-seat or per-user charge, so cost does not grow with team headcount. Instead, pricing scales with the compute size you select. The many dimensions map to AWS EC2 instance families: burstable t2 and t3 types, general-purpose m5 and m5d, compute-optimized c5 and c5d, and memory-optimized r5 and r5d. Within each family, larger sizes bill at a higher hourly rate. Billing is usage-based, and you can cancel anytime.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each dimension maps to an AWS EC2 instance size that runs your Zulip deployment. The pattern uses CloudFormation to launch auto-scaling EC2 instances, an RDS database, ElastiCache Redis and Memcached, S3 for file uploads, and SES for email. Larger instance types provide more compute and memory for bigger teams.
The hourly software charge meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue this hourly rate. Note that stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached disks, and the deployment uses auto-scaling, so multiple instances can run and bill at once during peak load.
The hourly rate covers the software running on the EC2 instance you select. The deployment also creates an RDS database, ElastiCache, an S3 bucket, and SES email delivery in your own AWS account. These underlying AWS resources bill separately through your standard AWS account charges.

CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."
Version release notes
- Bump default/minimum AsgInstanceType from t3.medium to t3.large; t3.medium reliably OOM-crash-loops under Zulip's worker processes (uwsgi, Tornado, ~15 queue workers), so medium is now excluded alongside nano/micro/small
- Bump versioned AMI parameter to AsgAmiIdv211 (AMI unchanged from 2.1.0)

Run the stack, providing valid parameters. When the stack creation completes, go to the outputs of the stack and open the URL in your browser. See the FirstUseInstructions output for guidance on creating an initial organization. To access the application servers, find the EC2 instance in the AWS console and Connect using the Session Manager option. For more detailed instructions, see the GitHub project.
