You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, so pricing scales with the compute you choose. The software cost is the same across all sizes; your hourly rate changes based on the instance's CPU, memory, and storage. Smaller shared-core instances like the t2 and t3 families suit light or intermittent use. General-purpose m3, m4, m5, and their variants cover steady workloads and larger memory needs, up to bare-metal options. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of billing cover for each instance type?
One hour equals one running instance of the chosen type. Each EC2 instance size defines how much CPU, memory, and storage you get. The software runs on Windows Server 2022 Datacenter with the command-line tool installed. You pay the hourly rate for each instance while it is running.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
The software rate meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. You resume billing when you start it again. Note that underlying AWS storage costs for a stopped instance may still apply separately from the software charge.
Which factor drives my hourly cost across the instance types?
The instance size drives your rate. Larger instances carry more CPU, memory, and storage, so their hourly rate is higher. The software layer is consistent across all sizes. Running several instances at once bills each one separately, and the charges add together on your invoice.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
