Moodle: Open Source Learning Management System on AWS
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen EC2 instance type. There is no upfront commitment. All 37 dimensions deliver the same Moodle learning platform; they differ only by the underlying instance type you select. Options span burstable t2 and t3/t3a families, general-purpose m4 through m7 families, compute-optimized c5 and c6 families, and memory-optimized r5 and r6 families. Sizes range from small and medium to large and xlarge. Larger or higher-generation instances carry higher hourly rates. Your total cost scales with the instance you run and hours of use.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of billing cover, and what instance size does the vendor recommend to start?
You are billed per running instance-hour for the Moodle software on the EC2 instance type you pick. Each dimension maps to one specific instance type. The deployment guide recommends the t3.small instance type as a starting point during setup.
Am I charged for the software when I stop the Moodle instance?
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. The guide explains you can stop the instance and restart it later at your convenience. When stopped, the software meter pauses, though underlying AWS storage fees may still apply for retained data.
How do I move to a different instance type if my needs change?
All 37 dimensions run the same Moodle platform, so you can switch instance types. The guide notes you remove the existing CloudFormation stack and launch again with your new choice. Back up server data first, since removal deletes the created resources.

Moodle is a self-hosted learning management system. This CloudFormation template provisions an EC2-based deployment with IAM and optional Route 53 integration, enabling secure, scalable online learning environments.
CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."
