You pay by the hour for this hardened Ubuntu 24 image with a security agent. Pricing is usage-based, so you are charged only for the hours each instance runs. The many options here are not tiers or feature levels. Each one maps to a specific Amazon EC2 instance type, such as general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and accelerated computing families. Larger instance sizes carry higher hourly rates because they provide more compute, memory, or storage. You choose the instance type that fits your workload, and the software rate applies on top of standard AWS infrastructure charges.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You get a pre-hardened Ubuntu 24 image with a security agent installed, ready to launch. The image includes updates, firewalls, and network protocols. The hourly software rate covers this packaged software. It runs on the compute, memory, and storage of the EC2 instance type you select.
The software rate meters running time only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. You may still pay standard AWS fees for attached storage while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
Two charges apply together on the same invoice. The hourly software rate covers this hardened image and security agent. Separate AWS infrastructure charges cover the underlying EC2 instance. Both meter by the hour based on the instance type you run. Neither replaces the other.

ssh to the instance public IP and login as 'ubuntu' user using the key specified at launch time. Use 'sudo su -' in order to get a root prompt.
