You pay by the hour for the Ubuntu 24 image, billed only for the time each instance runs. There is no upfront commitment. Pricing is set per AWS EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on the hardware you pick. Options span general purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, GPU, and high-memory families, each in sizes from nano and large up to metal and multi-xlarge. Larger instances carry more CPU, memory, and resources, so their hourly rate scales up accordingly. You select one instance type per running instance and can change sizes as your needs shift.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You pay for each hour a running instance uses the Ubuntu 24 image. One unit equals one instance-hour of the EC2 type you launch. Each running instance meters separately. Partial hours follow standard AWS metering. The rate reflects the CPU, memory, and resources of that specific instance type.
Software charges apply only while an instance runs. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue hourly software fees. Underlying AWS storage costs for the volume may still apply, but the Ubuntu 24 image meters running time only. Restarting resumes hourly billing.
This uses pay-as-you-go hourly billing. You commit to nothing upfront and pay only for the hours each instance runs. Charges stop when you stop the instance. You can switch instance types by relaunching, and the new type's hourly rate then applies. This suits variable or short-term workloads.
