Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, such as general-purpose (t, m), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r, x, z), storage-optimized (d, i, h), and accelerated computing (g, p, inf, trn) families. Larger instance sizes carry higher hourly rates because they provide more vCPU and memory. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs. Pick the instance type that fits your workload, and your rate follows that selection. No upfront commitment applies to this usage-based model.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You pay an hourly software charge for the pre-built Ubuntu 24.04 LTS image. This is a minimal-install, ready-to-deploy machine image. The rate is separate from the underlying AWS EC2 instance and storage fees, which AWS bills directly.
The software charge meters running hours only. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. Note that AWS may still bill you for attached storage while the instance is stopped, but that is an AWS charge, not the software rate.
