OpenTofu on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS provides a fully configured, production-ready environment for managing infrastructure as code on AWS.
OpenTofu is an open-source fork of Terraform, maintained by the Linux Foundation under the MPL 2.0 license. It is fully compatible with existing Terraform configurations, providers, and modules, making it a drop-in replacement for teams looking for a truly open-source IaC solution.
This AMI is built on a minimal installation of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat), updated to the latest security patches, and includes OpenTofu pre-installed and ready to use. It is designed for DevOps engineers, platform teams, and developers who want to manage AWS infrastructure without spending time on tool installation and configuration.

OpenTofu supports all Terraform providers and modules. Existing .tf configuration files work without modification. The syntax, commands (tofu plan, tofu apply, tofu destroy), and workflow are identical to Terraform.
The system is security hardened following best practices. SSH access uses key pair authentication only. Automatic security updates are enabled by default. AWS Security Groups are recommended for network access control.

Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for OpenTofu running on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, with vendor support included. Pricing is not tiered. Instead, each dimension maps to a specific AWS EC2 instance type, and you pick the one that fits your workload. Your hourly software rate changes with the instance you choose. Smaller general-purpose instances like t3 and m5 sizes cost less per hour. Larger compute, memory, storage, and GPU instances such as metal, 48xlarge, and multi-terabyte types cost more. You add EC2 infrastructure charges separately. Cost scales with instance size and hours run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each dimension bills per running hour of the matching EC2 instance type. The rate reflects the software licence for OpenTofu on that instance size. One hour equals one clock hour the instance runs. The size and family you pick set the hourly rate.
The software rate meters running hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still owe AWS for attached storage while stopped. Software billing resumes when the instance runs again.
Two charges apply together. The hourly software rate for your chosen instance covers OpenTofu and vendor support. Separately, AWS bills the underlying EC2 infrastructure for that same instance. Both appear on your AWS invoice and both scale with hours run and instance size.
