Sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and bare metal. Larger instances cost more per hour. You are billed only for hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each hourly unit covers one running EC2 instance of the type you select, bundled with Windows Server 2016 Datacenter and the Active Directory Certificate Services role. You pay per hour the instance runs. The compute size you choose sets the rate.
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance stops accruing software charges. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the attached disk, but the software meter counts running hours only.
T2, T3, and T3a are burstable families suited to lighter or intermittent certificate activity. The M3, M4, M5, M5a, M5ad, M5d, M5dn, and M5n families are general-purpose and fit steady, continuous workloads. Larger sizes carry a higher hourly rate.
