Zabbix Server is an enterprise-grade monitoring solution that provides real-time insights into IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, applications, databases, and cloud environments. This Amazon Machine Image (AMI) comes ready to use, allowing you to deploy a powerful monitoring solution in minutes on AWS.
Zabbix Server is the core element of Zabbix software. It performs the polling and trapping of data, calculates triggers, and sends notifications to users. It is the nerve center to which Zabbix agents and proxies report on the availability and integrity of systems, and it can remotely check networked services (such as web servers and mail servers) using simple service checks.
The server is the central hub and source of truth in which all configuration, statistical, and operational data is stored. It will actively alert administrators when problems arise in any monitored system.
All of the configuration information for Zabbix is stored in the database, which both the server and the web frontend interact with.
For example, when a user creates a new item using the web frontend (or API) it is added to the items table in the database.
Every 10 seconds, the Zabbix server queries the items table for a list of active items, which is then stored in a cache within the Zabbix server.
For distributed and large-scale monitoring environments, Zabbix Proxy can be used to offload monitoring tasks from the Zabbix server.

You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you choose to run Zabbix Server. The software itself carries no license fee; you pay for the compute capacity that hosts it. Options span two instance families. The t3a.small suits light workloads. The m6i and m7i families scale up from large through 2xlarge, 4xlarge, and 8xlarge sizes. Each step up adds more CPU and memory for monitoring larger environments. Pick the size that matches your expected load. Since billing is hourly, your cost tracks how long each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What resources do I get for each hourly instance size, and how are they billed?
Each dimension maps to an AWS EC2 instance type that hosts Zabbix Server. Sizes like t3a.small carry less CPU and memory; m6i and m7i sizes from large through 8xlarge add more of both. You pay per running hour of the chosen instance, with no software license fee.
Am I charged when my Zabbix Server instance is stopped or powered off?
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. A stopped or powered-off instance stops accruing hourly software charges. Underlying AWS storage attached to a stopped instance may still incur separate AWS fees. Metering tracks running time only.
Does the monitoring capacity I need decide which instance size to pick?
Yes. Larger environments with more monitored hosts and metrics need more CPU and memory. Choose a bigger instance in the m6i or m7i family as your monitoring load grows. Zabbix places no per-device limit, so instance size is what you scale for capacity.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
