The Ordinary Experts Bluesky PDS Pattern is an open-source AWS CloudFormation template that offers an easy-to-install AWS infrastructure solution for quickly deploying Bluesky Personal Data Server (PDS), using both AWS and Bluesky best practices. Automatically configured to support auto-scaling through AWS Autoscaling Groups, this solution leverages an EBS volume to persist data. It configures SES with Easy DKIM for emails, and configures Route53 with convenient DNS entries. The template ensure multi-level security by incorporating AWS IAM for federated access to resources with least privilege and AWS managed keys and Secret Manager to manage secrets for encryption of data at rest and in transit.
Highlights
- Production-ready Bluesky PDS, with SES for outbound email and an EBS volume for persistent storage
- Integrated with AWS Certificate Manager for HTTPS support
- Logs in CloudWatch Logs, Remote access via Session Manager

Ordinary Experts Bluesky PDS Pattern
The Ordinary Experts Bluesky PDS Patterns AWS Architecture Diagram shows the total flow of services from when the customer accesses the Bluesky PDS application. The diagram shows the following AWS Services: Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Virtual Public Cloud (Amazon VPC), Amazon Secrets Manager, and Amazon Simple Email Server.
CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."

Usage instructions
Run the stack, providing valid parameters. When the stack creation completes, go to the outputs of the stack and open the url in the outputs in your browser. To access the application servers, find the EC2 instance in the AWS console and "Connect" using the Session Manager option. All data saved by the Bluesky PDS application is stored on the encrypted EBS volume. To monitor for the health of the application, check the ALB Health Dashboard. On first boot, each instance will connect to SSM Parameter Store and Secrets Manager to download configuration and secrets. The NotificationTopicEmail parameter will subscribe that email to an SNS topic which is used for notifications for that particular stack. Several IAM resources are provisioned as part of this product: SesInstanceUser IAM user - used to generate an Access Key for SMTP email sending via SES. SesInstanceUserAccessKey IAM access key created to authenticate to SES from the application server. SesGenerateSMTPPasswordLambdaRole IAM role - used by Lambda to generate SMTP password based on Access Key and store in Secrets Manager. SesInstanceUserCreateSecretPolicy IAM policy - used by Lambda to conditionally create a secret in secrets manager if not provided. AsgInstanceRole IAM role - attached to EC2 instance and allows for association of EBS. AsgDescribeSubnetsPolicy IAM policy - allows AsgSubnetToLambda role to describe subnets. AsgSubnetToAzLambdaRole IAM role - attached to the AsgSubnetToAzLambda function which maps subnets to AZs. For network configuration, please reference the architecture diagram.
