Bluesky PDS on AWS by FOSSonCloud is a custom AMI + open-source AWS CloudFormation template that provisions a production-ready, AWS infrastructure solution for deploying Bluesky Personal Data Server (PDS).
Bluesky PDS on AWS by FOSSonCloud is an open-source AWS CloudFormation template that offers an easy-to-install AWS infrastructure solution for quickly deploying Bluesky Personal Data Server (PDS), using both AWS and Bluesky best practices.
Automatically configured to support auto-scaling through AWS Autoscaling Groups, this solution leverages an EBS volume to persist data. It configures SES with Easy DKIM for emails, and configures Route53 with convenient DNS entries.
The template ensures multi-level security by incorporating AWS IAM for federated access to resources with least privilege and AWS managed keys and Secrets Manager to manage secrets for encryption of data at rest and in transit.
Highlights
Production-ready Bluesky PDS, with SES for outbound email and an EBS volume for persistent storage
Integrated with AWS Certificate Manager for HTTPS support
Logs in CloudWatch Logs, Remote access via Session Manager
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run this software on. The dimensions map to different AWS instance families: t4g for burstable general use, a1 and m7g for general purpose, c7g for compute-focused work, and r7g for memory-heavy needs. Within each family, sizes range from nano and medium up through larger multi-xlarge and bare metal options. Larger sizes carry more compute, memory, and cost per hour. You select the instance that fits your workload, and billing scales with the size and hours you run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for this software?
One unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you choose, billed per hour. The software charge attaches to that instance while it runs. You pick a size from families like t4g, a1, m7g, c7g, or r7g. Each running instance meters separately by the hour.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
The software charge meters running instance-hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS costs, such as EBS storage used for local storage, backup, and restore, may still apply while the instance sits idle. Billing scales with the hours each instance actually runs.
How do I choose between the instance families offered?
Match the family to your workload. Use t4g for burstable general use, a1 and m7g for general purpose, c7g for compute-focused work, and r7g for memory-heavy needs. Larger sizes add compute, memory, and hourly cost. The pattern also runs Auto Scaling Groups, so instance count can grow with demand.

CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."
Version release notes
Upgrade Bluesky PDS from 0.4.219 to 0.4.5009 (latest upstream)
Switch CloudFormation AMI parameter from AsgAmiIdv200 to AsgAmiIdv210 (versioned parameter convention) so stack updates surface AMI changes correctly
Migration notes
Existing subscribers updating an in-place stack from 2.0.0 must update the parameter name in their stack-update wizard from AsgAmiIdv200 to AsgAmiIdv210. CloudFormation treats this as a real parameter change so the AMI swap is correctly applied.
No data-format or upstream config breaking changes between PDS 0.4.219 and 0.4.5009 -- pds.env shape is unchanged and the SQLite + blob store on the EBS data volume are read by the new image as-is.

Usage instructions
Run the stack, providing valid parameters. When the stack creation completes, go to the outputs of the stack and open the URL in your browser. To create the initial user account, connect to the EC2 instance via Session Manager and run sudo pdsadmin account create. All Bluesky PDS data (SQLite database, blob store) lives on the encrypted EBS data volume that persists across instance replacement. For more detailed instructions, see the GitHub project.
