Pixelfed on AWS by FOSSonCloud is an open-source AWS CloudFormation template that
offers an easy-to-install AWS infrastructure solution for quickly deploying
Pixelfed, using both AWS and Pixelfed best practices.
Automatically configured to support auto-scaling through AWS Autoscaling Groups,
this solution leverages an S3 bucket for user generated content between
application servers. It also provisions an ElastiCache Redis cluster for cache.
It configures SES with Easy DKIM for emails, and configures Route53 with
convenient DNS entries.
The template ensures multi-level security by incorporating AWS IAM for
federated access to resources with least privilege and AWS managed keys and
Secrets Manager to manage secrets for encryption of data at rest and in transit.
We support multiple availability zones using an RDS Aurora MySQL cluster
and EC2 Auto Scaling Groups. However, only one instance at a time is supported.

You pay by the hour based on the AWS EC2 instance size you choose to run this deployment. The dimensions are not feature tiers. They are the same Pixelfed pattern running on different compute types. Options range from small burstable t2 and t3 instances to memory-optimized r5 and r5d, compute-optimized c5 and c5d, general-purpose m5 and m5d, and bare-metal variants. Larger instances carry more CPU, memory, or storage, so your hourly rate scales with the capacity you select. You size the instance to your community's expected traffic.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billed hour cover, and what else runs alongside the EC2 instance?
You pay the hourly rate for the running EC2 instance you select. The pattern also deploys a managed relational database, an in-memory cache, object storage for photos, and a content delivery network. Those AWS services bill separately under your own account based on your usage.
Am I charged the hourly rate when the instance is stopped?
The hourly software rate meters running instance time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the software charge. You may still pay AWS for attached storage, the database, object storage, and other resources the stack created, since those persist while the instance is off.
How do I move to a different instance size as my community grows?
You choose the instance type at deployment. To change capacity, you switch to another supported instance dimension. Your hourly rate then matches the new type's rate. The same Pixelfed pattern runs on each option, so features do not change with the size you pick.

Run the stack, providing valid parameters. When the stack creation completes, go to the outputs of the stack and open the URL in your browser. To access the application servers, find the EC2 instance in the AWS console and Connect using the Session Manager option. For more detailed instructions, see the GitHub project.
