NATS.io is a connective technology built for the ever increasingly hyper-connected world. It is a single technology that enables applications to securely communicate across any combination of cloud vendors, on-premise, edge, web and mobile, and devices. NATS consists of a family of open source products that are tightly integrated but can be deployed easily and independently. NATS is being used globally by thousands of companies, spanning use-cases including microservices, edge computing, mobile, IoT and can be used to augment or replace traditional messaging.

If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
This listing is free to use. You pay nothing for the NATS.io Server software itself. Pricing runs on an hourly basis and is tied entirely to the AWS EC2 instance type you choose to run it on. Each dimension represents a different EC2 instance size, from small general-purpose types to large memory-, compute-, and storage-optimized machines. Your cost scales with the capacity of the instance you select. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates, while smaller ones cost less. You pick the instance that fits your workload and pay only for the hours it runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one pricing dimension represent, and what determines its hourly rate?
Each dimension is a specific AWS EC2 instance type where you run the NATS.io Server. The software itself is free. The hourly rate reflects the instance's size and class, such as general-purpose, compute-, memory-, or storage-optimized. You choose the instance that matches your workload's CPU, memory, and storage needs.
Am I charged when the instance running the server is stopped?
The software is free, so it adds no charge regardless of instance state. When you stop an EC2 instance, hourly compute charges stop. Underlying AWS storage attached to a stopped instance may still incur separate AWS fees. You pay only for the hours an instance actually runs.
If I need more capacity, do I switch instance types or add servers?
You can move to a larger instance type or run the server across multiple nodes. NATS supports clusters, superclusters, and leaf nodes to extend across regions and edge locations without redesign. Each instance you run is billed separately at its own hourly rate for the hours it runs.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Choosing a Machine Type:
The default machine type was chosen to be economical for developers and not intended for
benchmarking. NATS can run on extremely low resource environments so we recommend
choosing an machine type that meets your needs as detailed here:
Note that the NATS server is usually network bound, so be sure to choose a machine type that
meets your network requirements. When JetStream is enabled, you will also need to account for
storage performance with EBS. Here are some suggestions as a starting place, although we
recommend testing a variety of images to ensure your throughput and storage needs are met.
NATS Core:
Basic Development and Experimentation: t3a.medium
High Speed Production Usage: c4.2xlarge
Extreme Performance/Benchmarking: c6a.32xlarge
NATS JetStream:
Basic Development and Experimentation: t3a.medium
High Speed Production Usage: d3.8xlarge
Extreme Performance/Benchmarking: d3en.12xlarge
Once the VM is deployed, access your instance via SSH and refer to the file
/etc/nats-server/auth.conf for the default system account credentials and
user account credentials.
