The SFTP Gateway is a proxy server that provides a secure and convenient way to upload and download files from S3 buckets over the SFTP and SCP protocols. Manage access through IAM users and authenticate with the SFTP Gateway using IAM user credentials. No separate user management is necessary.
This implementation is unique because it does not buffer files on the local EBS volume. Instead, files are streamed directly to and from S3. This eliminates disk IO as a potential bottleneck for throughput and allows terabyte-sized files to be transferred efficiently. The SFTP Gateway can be deployed in public and private VPCs to serve both external users as well as clients connecting from a corporate network.

Standalone
This template creates deployment where the SFTP Gateway is accessible from the internet. Minimal configuration is required for this template and is the recommended way of deploying the SFTP Gateway. This deployment option provides employees, clients, partners and other external entities access to objects in S3 buckets.
This solution creates an Auto Scaling Group and leverages the Network Load Balancer for high availability, low latency and high throughput.
CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."

Usage instructions
The CloudFormation stack takes roughly 5 minutes to create. The Outputs section of the CloudFormation stack will provide you with the hostname of the SFTP load balancer (LoadBalancerHostName). Do not connect to the EC2 instances for SFTP, always go through the Load Balancer. The SFTP Gateway is running on port 22 and can be accessed through any SFTP or SCP client (see Recommended Clients in the Resources section).
Authentication is managed through AWS IAM user accounts. The SFTP Gateway will accept an Access Key ID as user name and the Secret Access Key as password.
