Companies use Household Spending Patterns to estimate their market share, potential and perform competitive analysis. For example, knowing that a household spends $6,500 annually on food in their trade area of 8,000 households, a supermarket can compare with their sales and estimate their gaps and potential as well as the competitive environment.
This database describes consumer spending habits on 400+ categories, including food, clothing, shelter, transportation, household operation, household furnishings, health care, personal care, recreation, reading materials, education, tobacco products and alcoholic beverages, financial services and insurance, gifts, RRSP and charity contributions.
Data fusion techniques were used to extrapolate the Statistics Canada household spending survey to the 6-digit postal code level across Canada.

Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one Product Access unit grant me?
One unit grants subscriber access to the Household Spending Patterns dataset. This database describes consumer spending on 400+ categories, including food, clothing, shelter, transportation, health care, recreation, and financial services. It covers every household across Canada, modeled down to the 6-digit postal code level.
What geographic levels does the dataset cover?
The data is available at multiple geographic levels: 6-digit postal code, FSA, DA, CT, CSD, CD, and custom geography. This lets you analyze spending patterns from a single postal code up to broader regions. Access to these levels comes with the single Product Access unit at no extra charge.
Does my cost change if I use more geographic levels or categories?
No. Access is free through a single Product Access unit. Cost does not scale by the number of spending categories, geographic levels, or households you analyze. You gain access to the full dataset without usage-based charges or tiered upgrades.
