After 2 years, 1 month, and 30 days of development, the Debian project is proud to present its new stable version 13 (code name trixie).
Debian 13 contains over 14,100 new packages for a total count of 69,830 packages, while over 8,840 packages have been removed as obsolete. 44,326 packages were updated in this release. The overall disk usage for trixie is 403,854,660 kB (403 GB), and is made up of 1,463,291,186 lines of code.
With this broad selection of packages and its traditional wide architecture support, Debian once again stays true to its goal of being The Universal Operating System. It is suitable for many different use cases: from desktop systems to netbooks; from development servers to cluster systems; and for database, web, and storage servers.

The Debian 13 software itself is free, so each dimension charges only an hourly rate tied to the AWS EC2 instance you choose to run it on. Pricing is not organized as tiers or feature packages. Instead, every dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type and size, from small general-purpose machines to large compute-, memory-, storage-, and GPU-optimized instances. Your cost scales with the instance you select and the hours you run it. You can launch on both arm64 and amd64 instance types across public regions.

What does one hourly unit cover, and what do I get for it?
Each dimension maps to one specific EC2 instance type and size, charged per hour it runs. The unit is one running instance-hour. The instance's CPU, memory, storage, and any GPU are set by the type you pick, from small general-purpose machines to large specialized ones.
Am I charged for an instance that is stopped or powered off?
The hourly rate accrues only while the instance runs. A stopped or powered-off instance stops the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS storage, such as the EBS gp3 root volume, may still bill separately while the instance is stopped.
Does the processor architecture I choose affect the hourly charge?
You can launch Debian 13 on both arm64 and amd64 (x86_64) instance types across public regions, except those in China and US GovCloud. Your hourly cost tracks the specific instance type and size you select, not the architecture itself.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
After launching your instance, connect to it using a Secure Shell (SSH) client with the SSH key you specified at launch. The default username is 'admin'.
