This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for a secure, ready-to-use Docker CE 29 container host with the Portainer web console. Run and manage containers from your browser on your own server, with unique passwords for every instance.
Docker lets you package an application with everything it needs and run it as a container, the same way on every server. Portainer adds a web console for starting, stopping and inspecting containers, images, volumes and networks without typing commands. This image gives developers and operations teams a ready Docker host in minutes, with a web console and examples to get going.
What is included: Docker Engine 29.8.0 with Compose v2, Buildx and containerd on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Portainer CE on port 9000, an Nginx landing page on port 80, Webmin 2.660 for server administration and two example Compose stacks in /home/ubuntu/examples. Docker's default network range is moved so it does not overlap common VPC addresses. Security is on by default: no password ships in the image. On first boot every instance sets its own Portainer and Webmin passwords, and SSH accepts key-based login only.
What you get on top of the free software: a pre-built and tested image that is ready in minutes, a unique security setup for every server, simple scripts for changing passwords, regular image updates, and help by email whenever you need it. Docker Engine is open source software licensed under Apache-2.0, and Portainer CE under the zlib licence. Docker is a trademark of Docker, Inc., and Portainer is a trademark of Portainer.io. This image is an independent build by ProvenCloud.
Highlights
Ready in minutes: launch the instance, open Portainer on port 9000 and manage containers from your browser. Docker Engine, Compose v2, Buildx and Webmin are already installed.
Secure by default: no shared or default passwords. Every instance sets its own Portainer and Webmin passwords on first boot, and SSH accepts key-based login only.
Start fast: two example Compose stacks are ready in the home folder, the disk is sized for container images, and Docker's address pool is set so it does not clash with your VPC.

You pay by the hour for the software, billed per running instance. The many dimensions all map to AWS EC2 instance types, so your rate depends on the instance size you launch. Smaller shared types like t3.nano cost less per hour, while compute, memory, storage, and accelerated families (c, m, r, i, g, x, and others) scale up as you add vCPU and memory. Larger sizes such as 8xlarge or 16xlarge carry higher hourly rates. You also pay AWS separately for the underlying compute and storage you use.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get on the image for the hourly rate I pay?
Each hourly rate covers one running instance of the pre-built container host. It includes Docker Engine, Docker Compose, Buildx, containerd, Portainer CE as a web console, nginx, and Webmin on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. No licence key is required, since the software is open source.
Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped?
The hourly software rate meters running time per instance. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the software charge. You may still owe AWS for attached storage, such as the gp3 root volume, while the instance is stopped. Billing resumes when you start the instance again.
Does the software rate include the AWS compute and storage I use?
No. The hourly rate shown is for the software only. AWS bills you separately for the EC2 compute and the EBS storage the instance uses, such as the gp3 root volume. Both charges appear on your AWS invoice alongside the software fee.

Vendor refund policy
Software charges are billed hourly, only while your instance runs. You can stop charges at any time by terminating the instance or cancelling your subscription. Charges already incurred are not refundable.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

Additional details
Usage instructions
Once the instance is running, open Portainer at http://<instance-public-ip>:9000 and sign in with admin as the username and your instance ID as the password. The landing page is at http://<instance-public-ip>. Webmin is on port 8000, so open http://<instance-public-ip>:8000 and sign in with admin as the username and your instance ID as the password. You can also connect over SSH with the username ubuntu and your Amazon key pair.
Required inbound ports: 22 (SSH), 80 (landing page), 9000 (Portainer) and 8000 (Webmin). Open extra ports only for the containers you publish. For security, allow ports 22, 9000 and 8000 only from your own IP address.
Your instance ID is shown in the EC2 console, for example i-0123456789abcdef0. Every instance sets its own passwords on first boot, so no two instances share a password. Allow two to three minutes after launch for the first-boot setup to finish before you sign in.
Try an example: connect over SSH, cd ~/examples/nginx-hello and run docker compose up -d. The README.md in ~/examples explains both stacks. Change your passwords with sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/pass_portainer.sh or pass_webmin.sh.
The image serves plain HTTP so it works on a bare IP address. Before using it in production, add your own domain and an SSL certificate, or place it behind a load balancer with HTTPS.
