Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour for Ubuntu Pro 18.04 LTS running on Arm-based (Graviton) EC2 instances. Each dimension maps to one instance type, such as t4g.nano through r8g.48xlarge and bare-metal sizes. Pricing scales with instance size, since it reflects the number of vCPUs in each type. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates than smaller ones. You choose the instance type that fits your workload, and billing is metered by usage. This charge covers the Ubuntu Pro software; you pay separately for the underlying EC2 compute.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
How is the hourly rate for each instance type determined?
Pricing scales with the instance size, based on the number of vCPUs in the instance. Larger instances with more vCPUs carry higher hourly rates. Charges are metered by the second, so you pay for actual running time. This suits automation, scaling, and deployments of any size.
Am I charged for the Ubuntu Pro software when an instance is stopped?
The software charge meters running instance time. When an instance is fully stopped, the per-second Ubuntu Pro charge does not accrue. You may still pay separate AWS fees, such as storage for attached volumes, but those are billed by AWS, not by this software listing.
What does the Ubuntu Pro charge cover beyond the base operating system?
The charge covers security maintenance and compliance services for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. This includes security patches for infrastructure and hundreds of open source applications, FIPS 140-3 and Common Criteria EAL2 certified components, optional CIS and DISA STIG hardening profiles, and Kernel Livepatch for updates without reboot.
