Each unit is one hour that your chosen EC2 instance runs the OpenVPN software on the hardened Ubuntu 22 image. You pick one instance type, and billing counts the hours it stays running. The rate matches that specific instance type. Different instance types carry different hourly rates.
The software charge meters running hours only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue hourly software charges. You may still pay separate AWS fees for storage attached to a stopped instance, but that is billed by AWS, not through this software rate.
Your hourly rate follows the instance type you launch, not a fixed price. Moving to a larger instance within a family raises the hourly rate because it offers more compute, memory, or storage. You pay the new rate for hours run after the switch. The change is manual, based on the instance you choose.
