What does one hourly unit cover, and what am I actually paying for?
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. You pay the software charge for the Ubuntu 22.04 GUI image plus the underlying AWS compute for that instance type. The desktop uses an Xfce environment you connect to over RDP or VNC.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software charge applies only while the instance runs. A stopped instance stops accruing hourly software fees. You may still pay AWS for attached storage while the instance is stopped. There is no upfront cost, monthly minimum, or long-term contract.
Does choosing a larger instance type raise the software price or just the AWS compute cost?
Pricing does not vary by software tier or features. Each instance type maps to its own hourly rate. Selecting a type with more CPU, memory, or GPU raises the per-hour cost. You pay only for the type you launch and the hours it runs.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

Connect with RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol):
Launch your RDP client software on your local machine.
Connect using the public IP address of your instance, on port 3389.
When prompted, enter the username (ubuntu) and the password (your Instance ID). When connecting with Windows Remote Desktop Connection, go to "More Options" and select "Allow me to save credentials." This is the only way the app will prompt you to enter a password.
Connect with VNC (Virtual Network Computing):
Launch your VNC client on your local machine.
Connect using the public IP address of your instance, on port 5901.
When prompted, enter the password (your Instance ID).
