Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour based on the AWS EC2 instance size you choose to run this pre-built software image. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type across several families: general-purpose (t2, t3, m3, m4), compute-optimized (c5), memory-optimized (r5), storage-optimized (i2, i3), and GPU-based (g5). Within each family, sizes range from small to very large. Larger instances offer more CPU, memory, or specialized resources, so your hourly cost scales with the capacity you select. You pick one instance type to match your workload and pay only for the hours you run it.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You are billed per hour that your chosen EC2 instance runs the pre-built software image. The hourly rate covers the software licence for the running instance. One unit equals one running instance-hour on the instance type you select. AWS charges its own infrastructure fees separately.
Software charges apply only while the instance runs. When you stop the instance, the hourly software fee stops accruing. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those are separate from the software charge and billed by AWS.
Each family targets a different resource need. Compute-optimized c5 favors CPU-heavy tasks. Memory-optimized r5 favors large in-memory data. Storage-optimized i2 and i3 favor high disk throughput. GPU-based g5 favors graphics or acceleration. You pick one type, and its hourly rate reflects that capacity.
