    Overview

Materialize delivers sub-second results on the same complex SQL queries that would take down your production DB or run overnight in your warehouse by turning the traditional database inside-out: Instead of re-computing results on every read, Materialize asks for your queries up-front (as Materialized views) and keeps results up-to-date as input changes using an efficient incremental computation engine.

    KEY FEATURES:

    • Kafka (MSK) and Postgres (RDS/Aurora) Connections - Stream real-time data into Materialize from Kafka and PostgreSQL.
    • Full SQL Capabilities: Bring us your twelve-way joins, multiple layers of aggregation, CTE's, we'll keep the results up-to-date.
    • Postgres Wire-Compatible: Any tool or driver that connects to Postgres connects to Materialize.
    • Consistent and Correct: Unlike other tools that deliver speed by sacrificing consistency, Materialize provides the same serializiability guarantees as any traditional database.
    • dbt Integration: First-class support for managing SQL in code with dbt.
    • AWS PrivateLink Compatible - Secure connection between AWS MSK clusters and Materialize via PrivateLink

    USE CASES:

Materialize helps small teams build with real-time data. No costly rewrites, no new language to learn, no stream processing maintenance burden. It's a modern cloud platform with separation of storage and compute, enabling multiple use-cases or teams to build on the same real-time data without disruption. Think Snowflake, but stream-first instead of batch-first.

Data teams use Materialize to reduce end-to-end analytics pipeline latency from hours to seconds - all without changing their SQL and dbt workflows. Software teams use it as a smart database-level cache, replacing complex microservices with SQL queries and making bug-prone database caching and denormalization obsolete.

Examples of how customers use Materialize:

    • Real-Time Analytics - Use the same ANSI SQL from data warehouses to build real-time views that serve internal and customer-facing dashboards, APIs and apps.
    • Automation and Alerting - Build user-facing notifications, fraud and risk models, and automated services using event-driven SQL primitives in a streaming database.
    • Segmentation and Personalization - Build engaging experiences with customer data aggregations that are always up-to-date: personalization, recommendations, dynamic pricing and more.
    • Machine Learning in Production - Power online feature stores with continually updated data, monitor and react to changes in ML effectiveness - all in standard SQL.

    BACKGROUND:

Materialize was cofounded by Arjun Narayan, coming from deep technical experience in databases at CockroachDB, and Frank McSherry, who developed the streaming frameworks that power Materialize: Differential Dataflow and Timely Dataflow, over the last ten years at Microsoft Research and now Materialize.

    Highlights

    • Incrementally Maintained Materialized Views - Materialize uses a revolutionary stream-processing framework to efficiently maintain SQL materialized views as input data changes.
    • Stream Data in from Kafka (MSK) and PostgreSQL (RDS/Aurora) - Materialize has first-class support for streaming data inputs via Kafka and PostgreSQL (by acting as a replica and connecting to the replication feed of your primary database.)
    • PostgreSQL wire-compatible - Materialize uses the Postgres network protocol, any tool that connects to a PostgreSQL database can integrate with Materialize.

Consistent design has accelerated my development but needs fresher themes and leaner components

    Reviewed on Jul 16, 2026
    Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I have been working with Materialize  design for five years in development. For example, when I need to make a table, in manual development coding I would have to make the table, then design it, add pagination and numbering, and decide how much data should be visible. Materialize  provides all of this in a single component like a table. I just use the style table and it provides me everything I need. Whatever would take me a lot of time to create manually, I can accomplish simply by using the component. Within five to ten minutes, I can get everything I need from there.

    What is most valuable?

Materialize offers the best features including design and responsive functionality, which helps me perform activities in multiple ways.

It helps me to speed up development and maintain consistent design as it provides every kind of component. I use Materialize in most cases and have used components like sidebars and tables, which provides consistency across my projects.

Customization is also supported, and the integration features are great as well. Materialize provides custom basic style classes which help me design and customize more, and the integration features allow me to easily implement functions and any functionality I need.

    What needs improvement?

Materialize provides a UI that is similar to what everyone uses. Everyone has a similar design, and even with customizability options, which is a complex thing, there are fewer options for a design UI. If I use Materialize in my website and another person uses the same UI, we will both have the same design which looks similar with nothing changed. The UI theme should have more options so we can see different modules.

Performance is very good, but at some points the UI and functionalities are a little larger to see and analyze. For example, Shadcn has smaller and great UI as well as functionality. I can find everything in Shadcn such as calendar and dropdown, and many other things that I think are less present in Materialize.

Design and more new options would make an impact on improving Materialize.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working in my field for five years.

How are customer service and support?

I did not have any contact with customer service.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I use multiple things in multiple projects. In other projects, I have used Shadcn and Chakra UI, and there are many others I could name. I have used Chakra UI, and in most cases I use Tailwind CSS for the design.

What other advice do I have?

Materialize is consistent and dependable. I can see a lot of versions have come out over time, which is a very great thing.

I would recommend other people to use it because of its consistency in design and scalability.

Materiaze has a lot of improvements coming, and I would love to be part of that development. I have gotten a chance with Materialize.

I am satisfied with the product. It was a great experience for me and cost-effective as well. For me it has saved both time and money.

I would suggest making the interview shorter. It is good, but there are too many questions. Nobody has a half hour or one hour to give for an interview, so it should be ten to fifteen minutes.

My overall review rating for Materialize is seven out of ten.

    Building Applications with pre-builted components!

    Reviewed on Feb 24, 2020
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
I love that materialize is already included inside NPM allowing you to easily import any of the the designs needed to build out an application. I love it because you don't have to reinvent the wheel when google provides you with great designs for building forms and such. I love it for that reason!
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike that alot of the responsive features use Jquery which is pretty outdated. So you can't utilize some features in react such as Autocomplete without importing another library.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
When building our our application, we choose to use Materialize as our CSS Framework, this allowed us to focus on the development of handling operations and not the design. It looks great and works without having alter anything! It's great because it speed up a majority of development only focusing on what's important.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you want a modern looking application, I would recommend Materialize to handle all of the CSS work for you! It's a great solution overall and will definitely make you have a foot over your competition.

Materialize is the way to go for mobile web applications

    Reviewed on Oct 13, 2019
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
Materialize has flat simplistic design style that looks better on mobile devices than bootstrap. Materialize styles are more optimized for mobile and touch screen interactions.
What do you dislike about the product?
Materialize has less support and a lower community of active users than Bootstrap. Its is harder to get assistance online or tutorials than is the case with bootstrap
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Materialize css styles give a mobile web application a native appeal than you would get while using bootstrap.

Very easy to implement and use

    Reviewed on Jul 31, 2019
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
The framework is very clean and organized. You can find the class you need very fast and in a intuitive menu. It has the majority of the elements and front end interactions that you need to set up a very nice and good looking Website or web app. The best thing for me is the simple implementation using CDN or downloading the files.
What do you dislike about the product?
Even though materialize has its own documentation some times you need to make some changes that it is not specified in the doc. I would like materialize to have a community or at least the most common QAs.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I had set up functional static websites in just some minutes using this framework with high acceptance and very good look and feel.

    Modern minimalist themes

    Reviewed on Jul 19, 2019
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
This CSS framework is very light, it is also easy to implement. What is best is that it is pretty easy to do mobile ready websites with it.

The documentation just excellent! I really love it because you can just type what you want on their website and you will have a dedicated page on how to implement that class or component.
What do you dislike about the product?
This framework is not "dislikable" for me. What could improve is the way to use navigation bars on containers. It can get tricky to get it to "full width" while maintaining the container's margins.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I love to use it with Angular and find it more easy to use it with Angular than using it with Bootstrap, because Bootstrap is very dependent on its script file and materialize isn't. But if you need it, it can be included easily on the component you need it.
