You pay by the hour for the Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS with support, billed per running instance. Pricing is not tiered. Instead, each dimension maps to a specific AWS EC2 instance type you choose to run. Costs scale with the size and family of that instance. Smaller burstable types like t2, t3, and t3a suit light workloads. Larger general-purpose families like m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n scale up compute, memory, and storage. Bare-metal 'metal' options are also available. You only pay for the hours each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get when I run one of these hourly instances?
You get a Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS image with support, running on the AWS EC2 instance type you select. Each dimension maps to one instance family and size. That choice sets the vCPU, memory, and storage. You connect over SSH using a key pair and the ubuntu login.
Am I charged when I stop or power off an instance?
The software charge meters running hours only. When an instance is stopped, the hourly software fee stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage or other resources tied to a stopped instance may still incur separate AWS charges, but the per-hour software rate applies only while the instance runs.
How do I switch to a different instance size, and does my rate change?
Each instance type is billed at its own hourly rate. To move to a different size or family, you launch that instance type instead. Your hourly charge then follows the rate for the new type. There is no automatic upgrade; you choose the type when you start an instance.
