You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run Minimal Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS on. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, so your rate depends on the compute you choose. Options span burstable t2, t3, and t3a families for lighter, variable workloads. They also include general-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n families, up to bare-metal sizes. Rates scale with instance size, from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and metal. You pay only for the hours each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of billing cover for a given instance type?
Each hourly rate covers one running instance of the EC2 size you selected, such as t3.medium or m5.4xlarge. You pay for one machine per hour. Running two instances of the same type bills two hourly charges. The rate bundles the software with that instance size.
Am I charged the hourly rate when my instance is stopped?
The hourly software charge meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the per-hour software fee. You may still pay underlying AWS storage costs for the attached volumes while the instance is stopped. Charges resume once you start the instance again.
How do I move to a different instance size if my needs change?
Each instance size is a separate hourly dimension. To change compute, you launch the instance type you need and stop the old one. Billing follows whichever instance is running. There is no upfront commitment, so you can switch between burstable t-family and general-purpose m-family sizes as workloads change.
