Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for Apache Hadoop running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance type. Each dimension maps to one instance size, so pricing is not tiered by features. The software runs the same across all options. Your rate changes with the instance you pick, not the capabilities you unlock. Memory-optimized (r-series), storage-optimized (i-series, d-series), compute-optimized (c-series), and general-purpose (t-series) families are available in sizes from small to metal. You scale cost by selecting larger instances or running more hours. All billing is usage-based with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each unit is one running Amazon EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. You pay the software rate for that instance's compute, memory, and storage profile. The Apache Hadoop software runs the same on every option; the instance size sets the hourly rate.
The software rate meters running instance-hours only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. Note that underlying AWS storage fees may still apply while an instance is stopped, but those are separate from the hourly software charge.
Your rate follows the instance type you pick. Choose a smaller instance to reduce the hourly rate or a larger one for more resources. You can also run fewer or more hours. There is no upfront commitment, so cost tracks actual usage.
