See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
The software itself is free, so you pay only for the AWS EC2 instance you run it on. Pricing is billed hourly per instance. Your cost depends entirely on which instance type you choose. Options span general-purpose families (t2, t3, t3a, m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5n, m5dn, m5ad, m5zn, m6i, m6a, m6id, m6in, m6idn) plus one compute-optimized type. Within each family, sizes range from small (nano, micro, large) up to large multi-core and metal instances. Larger instances cost more per hour. Select the size that matches your traffic-forwarding workload.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly instance charge cover, and am I billed when the instance is stopped?
You are billed per running instance-hour for the AWS EC2 instance hosting the software. The software license itself is free. A stopped or powered-off instance stops accruing hourly charges, though attached AWS storage may still incur separate fees. Only running time meters against your instance selection.
What does one instance actually run, and can it do more than one function?
Each instance runs a virtual machine that acts as a DNS forwarder, DNS sinkhole, or HTTP forwarder for enterprise traffic. The instance forwards traffic to the security service where policy applies. A sinkhole configuration requires two network interfaces, which you set up on the VM.
Since the software is free, what drives the difference in cost between instance types?
Cost depends entirely on the AWS EC2 instance size and family you pick. Larger instances with more cores and memory cost more per hour. The general-purpose families and the one compute-optimized type each bill independently by their own hourly rate. Match the size to your traffic-forwarding volume.
