The AMI helps reduce manual hardening effort and configuration drift across AWS accounts and environments. Deploy and Operate with Confidence
The image is ready for use when launched. Citadel recommends AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) for administrative access whenever possible so SSH does not need to be exposed to the public Internet.
If SSH is required, use the ec2-user account, your selected EC2 key pair, and tightly scoped network access.

You pay by the hour for the ARM-based EC2 instance you run this hardened operating system on. Each dimension maps to a specific ARM instance type, so pricing scales with the size and family you choose. Smaller sizes like medium, large, and nano cost less per hour than larger sizes such as 16xlarge, 48xlarge, and metal variants. Instance families cover general purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and graphics workloads. You select the instance that fits your compute, memory, and storage needs, and billing accrues only while it runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of the software charge cover on a running instance?
You pay a per-hour software fee for the chosen ARM instance type, on top of the underlying AWS compute cost. The fee accrues each hour the instance runs. Larger instance types carry a higher per-hour rate than smaller ones. Billing is measured in instance-hours, not per user or per core.
Am I charged the software fee when the instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software fee meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the software charge. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes while the instance is stopped, but the operating-system license bills only while the instance runs.
Does the hardening verification affect what I pay per hour?
No. The hardened baseline is included in every instance type at the same per-hour software rate structure. Verification covers the operating-system baseline as packaged for the release. Your applications, account configuration, and post-deployment changes stay outside that scope and do not change the hourly charge.

Using Hardened Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 (ARM)
Connect to Your Instance
We recommend using AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) whenever possible. It provides a secure way to access your instance without exposing SSH to the public Internet.
If SSH is enabled, limit port 22 in your security group to your trusted IP address whenever possible. For production environments, we recommend deploying the instance inside a private VPC and using SSM or another controlled access method.
Use the documentation to review the image's security baseline, applied controls, validation results, and any documented exceptions.
