Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for each running Arm-based (Graviton) EC2 instance, with the Ubuntu Pro charge added on top of the underlying compute. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, so pricing scales with the size and family you pick. Smaller shared instances like t4g.nano cost less per hour, while larger and bare-metal sizes such as m8gd.metal-48xl cost more. Pricing tracks the instance's vCPUs and is metered by the second. You choose only the instance types you deploy; there are no separate tiers or bundles to select.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
The Ubuntu Pro charge is based on the number of vCPUs in the instance and is metered by the second. Larger instance families and sizes carry more vCPUs, so the software charge scales up with them. This charge is added on top of the underlying EC2 compute cost.
The Ubuntu Pro charge meters running time by the second, so a stopped instance stops accruing the software fee. You may still pay underlying AWS storage costs for a stopped instance, but those are separate from the Ubuntu Pro software charge shown here.
The charge covers security patches for Ubuntu infrastructure and hundreds of open source applications. It includes FIPS 140-3 and Common Criteria EAL2 certified components, optional CIS and DISA STIG hardening profiles, and Kernel Livepatch for updates without reboot. Coverage runs until 2032 for this 22.04 LTS release.
