Rebuilding a Zabbix 4.2 stack today means hunting down archived repositories for an end-of-life branch. This AMI eliminates that effort by shipping the complete server, frontend, database, and web server already wired, tested, and ready to monitor your first host in approximately 8 minutes.

Small and mid-sized organizations (10-250 employees) and MSP/hosting providers running established Zabbix 4.2 deployments that cannot be upgraded on short notice - typically because monitoring templates, integrations, or compliance sign-off are tied to this branch. Security Posture
No baked-in credentials: Every secret is generated on the instance at first boot using IMDSv2, so no two instances share a password
MariaDB: Random 32-byte root password generated at boot, stored in /etc/imaxe/secrets/mariadb/password (mode 0600, root only), with unix_socket authentication enabled
Minimal open ports: Only 22 (SSH), 80/443 (frontend), and 10051 (Zabbix trapper) are required. Port 10050 binds to 127.0.0.1 only. Java gateway and web service ports are not shipped
No AWS keys stored on the image: The SNS and auto-scaling scripts use the instance IAM role exclusively
Forced password change: The initial Admin password is the EC2 instance ID, and you are prompted to change it immediately
Getting Started After Launch
Launch the AMI on an x86_64 instance (c5.large recommended), attaching an IAM role for SNS or auto-scaling features
Open security group ports: 22 (SSH), 80 and 443 (frontend), 10051 (Zabbix trapper)
Browse to http:/// or https:// for the self-signed certificate
Log in as Admin with the EC2 instance ID as the password, then change it immediately
Point your first Zabbix agent at port 10051 - auto-registration is already enabled, so the host appears on its own
Configuring SNS Alerts (3 Steps)
Create SNS topics in your AWS account for each Zabbix severity level (not classified, information, warning, average, high, disaster)
Add the topic ARNs and your AWS region to /etc/zabbix/zabbix_ami.yml
Attach an IAM role with sns:Publish to the instance and add the "AWS SNS" media to the Zabbix users who should receive alerts
Example Use Case: Monitoring an EC2 Fleet with SNS Alerting
A DevOps team managing 100 EC2 instances launches this AMI on a c5.large. Within minutes, they install the Zabbix agent on each server and point it at port 10051. Auto-registration detects each host and applies the preconfigured monitoring template. When CPU utilization on a web server exceeds the threshold, a Zabbix trigger fires and the SNS relay delivers an alert to the team's notification topic - reaching Slack, PagerDuty, or email depending on how the SNS subscription is configured. The entire workflow from detection to notification runs without storing any AWS credentials on the monitoring server.

What does one hourly unit cover, and does the AWS Marketplace fee include the EC2 machine cost?
Each hourly unit covers one running EC2 instance of the type you pick. It maps to the machine hosting the monitoring server and alerting setup. The AWS Marketplace software fee covers the image only. AWS bills the underlying EC2 compute separately, so your total combines both charges.
Am I charged the hourly software fee when the instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software fee meters running time only, so a fully stopped instance does not accrue it. Attached storage may still incur separate AWS fees while the instance is stopped. To avoid all charges, terminate resources you no longer need.
How does cost change if I move to a larger instance for more monitoring capacity?
Every instance type ships the same monitoring server and alerting setup, so features do not change. You pay the hourly rate of whichever type is running. Switching to a larger family raises the hourly charge; switching to a smaller one lowers it. The change applies from the moment the new instance runs.

Create a new EC2 instance and, when is up, you can enter on http[s]://instance-ip4-address/zabbix/. On login page, enter 'Admin' as user, and current instance-id as password. Also, SSH access is allow with username 'ubuntu' and your AWS private key.

Fixes to upstream Zabbix 4.2 itself (an end-of-life branch receiving no upstream patches), authoring your monitoring templates, triggers, or dashboards, monitoring or troubleshooting of the systems you monitor, your AWS account, network, or third-party integrations, and modifications made to the image after launch.
