Instead, each rate maps to a specific EC2 instance type you choose, such as general purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, GPU, or high-memory families. The hourly software rate scales with the size and capability of the instance you select. Larger instances within a family carry higher hourly rates than their smaller counterparts. You launch only the instance types you need and pay for the hours each one runs, with no upfront commitment.

The software rate meters running time only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS storage fees may still apply while the instance is stopped, but those are separate from the per-hour software charge shown in the table.
