You pay by the hour for this hardened Ubuntu 18 image, and the rate depends on the EC2 instance type you run. Pricing is not tiered into plans. Instead, each of the hundreds of instance types carries its own hourly software rate. Smaller instances like t2.micro and t3.nano cost less per hour, while larger compute, memory, storage, and accelerated types cost more as capacity grows. Charges apply only while an instance runs. AWS infrastructure fees are billed separately from this software rate. You choose the instance type that fits your workload and pay accordingly.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
The rate is tied to the EC2 instance type you launch. Each instance family and size carries its own hourly software charge. Compute, memory, storage, and accelerated instances price differently as their capacity grows. You select the instance type, and the matching hourly software rate applies while it runs.
The software rate meters running time only. A stopped or terminated instance stops accruing the hourly software charge. Note that AWS may still bill underlying storage or other infrastructure fees separately while an instance is stopped, but those are not part of this software rate.
No. The hourly figure here covers only the hardened Ubuntu 18 software license. AWS bills its own EC2 infrastructure charges separately for the instance you run. Your total cost combines both: the software rate for the instance type plus the standard AWS compute and resource fees.
