What determines the hourly software rate I pay for this Ubuntu 18 image?
The rate is tied to the EC2 instance type you launch. Each instance family and size carries its own hourly software charge. Compute, memory, storage, and accelerated instances price differently as their capacity grows. You select the instance type, and the matching hourly software rate applies while it runs.
Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software rate meters running time only. A stopped or terminated instance stops accruing the hourly software charge. Note that AWS may still bill underlying storage or other infrastructure fees separately while an instance is stopped, but those are not part of this software rate.
Does this hourly rate include the AWS compute cost for running the instance?
No. The hourly figure here covers only the hardened Ubuntu 18 software license. AWS bills its own EC2 infrastructure charges separately for the instance you run. Your total cost combines both: the software rate for the instance type plus the standard AWS compute and resource fees.
