One unit is one running instance of the hardened image on that specific EC2 instance type. The rate covers the software licence per hour the instance runs. Underlying AWS compute, storage, and network fees are billed separately by AWS. Each instance you launch meters its own hours independently.
Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software rate meters running hours only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. You may still pay AWS for attached storage while the instance is stopped, but the hardened image licence bills active running time.
How do I change instance types, and does my hourly rate change automatically?
You choose the instance type when you launch. The software rate matches the type running at that time. If you resize to a different instance type, the applicable hourly rate for the new type takes effect once it runs. Larger sizes carry proportionally higher rates.

To connect to your instance using the Amazon EC2 console:
Open the Amazon EC2 console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/.
In the navigation pane, choose Instances.
Select the instance and choose Connect.
Choose the EC2 Instance Connect tab.
For Connection type, choose Connect using EC2 Instance Connect.
