You pay by the hour for the running software, and the rate depends on the EC2 instance type you choose. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size within families like t2, t3, t3a, m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n. Smaller instances such as t3a.nano or t2.micro carry lower hourly rates, while larger sizes like m5.24xlarge or the metal options cost more per hour. Pricing scales with the compute, memory, and storage capacity of the instance. You run only what you need and stop billing when you stop the instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. The rate reflects that instance's compute, memory, and storage. You pick a single family and size, such as m5.large or t3.medium, and pay the hourly rate while it runs.
The software rate meters running time only. When you stop the instance, hourly software charges stop accruing. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the software licence bills for active running hours.
Choose the size based on how many users, devices, and directory requests you manage. Larger families like m5, m5d, or metal options give more compute and memory for busy forests. Smaller t2 and t3a sizes suit lighter directory workloads. You pay the matching hourly rate.
