Brings all data processes under one platform and simplifies collaboration across teams
What is our primary use case?
I use Domo mostly for ETL purposes and dashboarding purposes. Data engineering, data analytics, data science, everything related to data. It's an integrated business intelligence tool. You can connect your data from various sources, transform them into the tool, display it on the dashboard to get meaningful insights.
Effectively, we have done some projects for different customers on the platform and the effectiveness is in the sense of automation of different kinds of reports that the customers want to see. Frequently updating data sources and the data should be updated on a frequent basis. It can be on a daily basis, hourly basis, the data can be refreshed and accessed by the teams in the sense that they want to use it for their business processes. They want to have the latest insights, KPIs delivered to them.
Decision making, for example, there can be some warehouse data that needs to be updated and some decisions need to be taken based on what kind of stock replenishment a particular customer wants to do in their warehouse. The decisions can be taken by looking at the refreshed data, the calculations that are done. What is the expected forecast of the stock that might need to be stocked up inside the platform, in the warehouse. This was one of the use cases. Related to this, there can be multiple other things which can be made use of. A customer can look at a particular KPI and make a business decision which can benefit their company in terms of reducing costs and maximizing profits.
Domo analyzer has multiple charts. There are hundreds of charts we can choose from to display our data. It depends on what the customer wants to see and how the interpretation of the KPI needs to be made.
We can create our own automotive agents inside the platform as well. AI agents for automating some tasks. We can make use of that.
It's pretty much useful in cases where we want to forecast a time series kind of data where the future forecast depends on some time value. The capabilities of Domo to predict for future forecast is pretty good and we can make use of it.
Mobile accessibility allows us to give different alerts and notifications to the end users about changes happening in their data, if there are any threshold values that are changing and need the attention of the end user. We can alert them on their mobile phones. They can also view the dashboards or the reports that we have created on their mobile apps.
What is most valuable?
The one thing that stands out in case of Domo is that you have everything under the same tool. You don't have to log in into any particular cloud services to have access to that platform. It's just a web-hosted platform. Everything related to data engineering, data science, ETL, everything comes under the same umbrella. You can do it on the same platform. We have different connectors to connect with different data sources, and these connectors are pretty much available for each and every data source in the industry.
It's pretty much understandable for any non-technical user to make use of the dashboards that are prepared. As the end goal of most of the end goals or end products of any use case in Domo leads to creation of any report or a dashboard that can be understood by any non-business, non-technical person.
What needs improvement?
Sometimes the tool tends to be a little laggy, but it depends on what kind of volume of data that we are working in. If it's large, then it can be a little bit laggy in the sense it can take a little time to load and do some transformations on the data.
I don't think Domo is lacking any capability as far as the industry trends or requirements are concerned. But as we move towards the adoption of AI and LLMs, I think creation of LLMs and vector embedding, these sorts of stuff can be included inside the platform. I'm sure it has already been implemented as I speak of it. But that's what is something that I haven't noticed till now.
In terms of pricing, it depends on what kind of model you're going for. There are two kinds of pricing systems. One is credit-based and one is consumption-based. If the Domo instance is on credit-based, we have to be careful about the transformations and the number of rows that we are working for. In terms of cost comparison to other BI platforms or data engineering analytics or data science platforms, it comes on a little costlier side. But given the kind of functionalities that it offers under one umbrella, it is pretty much worth it.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Domo for around two and a half years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Domo can be a little costlier if the data volume is high as compared to other Azure or GCP solutions. It can come on a little costlier side, but given the kind of advantages that Domo offers, it's really worth it. Everything comes under the same umbrella and it's pretty user-friendly. A non-technical person, completely business person would be able to understand the technicalities of it pretty easily.
How are customer service and support?
I have raised a few tickets in the tech support and the tech support is pretty brilliant when it comes to solving technical problems. The problems are taken care of in a very prompt manner. They are solved pretty decently as far as the complexity is concerned. No matter how complex the problem is, it can be taken care of by the support team. The support team is pretty brilliant.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have worked on some platforms ranging from Databricks . I have worked with Power BI, Tableau, SQL, MySQL , it's a data engineering tool that we can make use of. I have worked with ClickHouse as well. I'm a certified ClickHouse developer, so we make use of that.
How was the initial setup?
In terms of the setup, you just need to have a login ID and password. Or there can be a single SSOÂ sign-on process. It's pretty easy. Setup from a technical perspective, we have to pull data from different sources and make changes on it, but it is not something that a non-technical person needs to look at. It can be handled by some data engineers or data analysts.
What was our ROI?
I haven't personally looked at the ROI point of view as I am a technical user of it. I do technical stuff. I analyze data, transform it, do data engineering stuff. In terms of ROI, the company that I'm working for, the business users or the business head takes care of it, so I won't be able to answer that.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Domo is a completely integrated tool. We don't have to have any access to a particular cloud to log into their services. They have their own instances that are allocated to different clients. We can make use of it directly. That is one advantage that I can think of. Apart from that, in terms of functionalities, it is pretty much the same that is available in each and every tool.
What other advice do I have?
If you want everything inside one hood, you don't have to think about a lot of services as far as cloud is concerned. You don't have to think about the storage, you don't have to think about buying different cloud services, then you should go for Domo as everything comes under the same umbrella. You just have to think about the cost part.
I would rate Domo 9.5 out of 10.
