Amazon FSx Intelligent-Tiering

Fully elastic file storage class with automatic cost savings

Overview

The Amazon FSx Intelligent-Tiering storage class delivers fully elastic file storage that automatically scales up and down with your workloads, which means you pay only for what you use, when you use it. FSx Intelligent-Tiering offers virtually unlimited storage that can scale to terabytes per second of throughput and millions of IOPS for machine learning (ML) and high performance computing (HPC) workloads. Whether you are migrating existing workloads or launching new cloud-native applications, FSx Intelligent-Tiering automatically optimizes your costs based on access patterns. With no need to provision storage, manage capacity, or implement data lifecycle policies, this storage class eliminates operational overhead while maximizing cost efficiency.

Purpose-built for Amazon FSx for Lustre and Amazon FSx for OpenZFS file systems, FSx Intelligent-Tiering combines performance, pay-for-what-you-use elasticity, and automated cost optimization in a single solution.

Benefits

Reduce storage costs by up to 34% compared to traditional on-premises HDD-based file storage and up to 96% lower storage costs for rarely accessed data compared to other fully managed file offerings in the cloud. FSx Intelligent-Tiering automatically optimizes storage costs by moving data into more cost-effective tiers based on access patterns, and, because it scales up and down, you only pay for what you use.

Automatically adapt to changing storage needs without manual intervention. Your file system grows and shrinks as demands change, providing virtually unlimited storage capacity, and, unlike other file storage offerings, you only pay for what you actually use.

Focus on innovation rather than infrastructure. FSx Intelligent-Tiering removes the need for capacity planning, pre-provisioning, and complex data lifecycle management through fully automated storage optimization.

Experience high-performance storage with up to millions of IOPS, terabytes per second of throughput, and sub-millisecond latencies for all data. You can also configure an optional SSD read cache for SSD level performance at HDD pricing.

How FSx Intelligent-Tiering works

Amazon FSx Intelligent-Tiering is a storage class that automatically optimizes your storage costs by moving less-accessed data to lower-cost access tiers. This fully elastic storage class continuously monitors your data access patterns without any performance impact or management overhead. For even faster access to your most frequently used data, FSx Intelligent-Tiering offers an optional SSD-based read cache, which provides sub-millisecond latencies.

FSx Intelligent-Tiering access tiers:

  • Frequent Access Tier: All data starts here and remains in this tier as long as it's accessed within a 30-day period.
  • Infrequent Access Tier: When data hasn't been accessed for 30 days, it automatically moves to this tier, reducing storage costs compared to the Frequent Access Tier.
  • Archive Access Tier: After 90 days without access, data transitions to this highly cost-efficient tier, offering additional savings beyond the Infrequent Access Tier.

Any time your data is accessed, it is automatically moved back to the Frequent Access Tier, restarting the tiering timeline. Data stays in the FSx Intelligent-Tiering storage class, and it is independent of the other FSx storage options.
