Clean Energy Accelerator

Amazon Operations Sustainability

The Clean Energy Accelerator is proud to support Amazon in decarbonizing its operations. The Clean Energy Accelerator will source and identify novel climate-tech startups from around the world and pilot their solutions with Amazon Operations. This hands-on testing will determine which solutions are best suited for Amazon’s decarbonization needs and can be effectively scaled across Amazon's vast global operations network.

Amazon operations is looking for startups with innovative solutions in these 4 focus areas:

Expand each area to learn more

  • Low carbon materials: Technologies to reduce the costs of low-carbon materials such as concrete, steel, asphalt and timber.

  • Scope 3: Solutions for supply chain decarbonization, such as manufacturers to access low-carbon equipment and technologies.

  • Digital twins: Digitally optimizing building performance (Operational Carbon).

  • Energy efficiency: Innovations to help reduce energy usage across buildings baselining: Baseline building assets and accurately calculating the carbon footprint of products EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) | Solutions for making EPDs more accessible for the value chain.

  • Employee commute: Applications development to help decarbonize employee commute journeys.

  • Building management systems: Solutions for speeding the collection of real time data of building assets to understand consumption data.

  • Renewable energy: Innovations in renewable energy for large scale developments.

  • Carbon capture: Proven technologies for carbon capture and applicability to Operations or Data centers.

  • Heat recovery: Solutions to recover heat from Ops/data centers and redistribute for alternative use.

  • Repair and refurbish: Electronics and batteries to extend lifespan and reduce cost and environmental impact.

  • Waste stream sortation: AI & ML solutions for sorting products, packaging and other materials from Amazon operations waste streams.

  • Data & machine learning for sustainability: Solutions for collecting data on the materials used in each product and packaging and/or ML models to assign such criteria to products and packaging. Examples include, digital product passports, invisible watermarks, Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASIN) sustainability attributes to collect and track data across the value chain, and ML models to assign sustainability metrics to products and packaging.

  • Stand-by emergency power generation: Solutions for electrification of diesel generators and equipment. Examples include, batteries, fuel cells, and others.

  • Infrastructure as a service: New business models to help companies overcome the capex hurdle and provide operating expenditure solutions (leased solutions) such as electrical HVAC, battery storage, and EV charging for companies.

  • Zero-emission vehicles (batteries):

    • Solutions for innovative battery technologies, battery pack design/production, or increasing battery energy density, battery swap

    • Solutions for battery recycling, battery storage

    • Solutions for battery electric vehicle (BEV)/fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), vehicle or e-axle production

    • Solutions for battery management system software that improves vehicle performance, driver experience, safety, vehicle lifetime, or charging interface

  • Zero-emission vehicles (fuel cell): Technologies to reduce the costs of fuel cells and hydrogen storage tanks.

  • Vehicles (range/efficiency): Enhancements to designing/producing aerodynamic design retrofits to improve energy efficiency.

  • Affordable low-carbon fuels (diesel): Innovative production of second-generation renewable diesel/e-diesel to reduce costs.

  • Affordable low-carbon fuels (audit):

    • Solutions to track the consumption of low-carbon fuels by third parties, correctly matching the consumption with the customer's entitlement

    • Solutions that trace the origin of feed to low carbon fuels

  • Affordable low-carbon fuels (maritime): Solutions for aspects of the low carbon maritime fuel value chain particularly bio/e-methanol or green ammonia.

  • Affordable low-carbon fuels (hydrogen):

    • Project developers for green h2 production

    • Solutions for developing chain of custody technology to trace environmental attributes through the fuel or material value chain

    • Solutions for delivering fuel to customers without requiring additional infrastructure
