Amazon EC2 T8i Instances

Low-cost burstable general-purpose instances for lightweight workloads

Why Amazon EC2 T8i instances?

T8i instances are low-cost burstable instances powered by custom sixth generation Intel Xeon 6 processors, available exclusively on AWS, and built on the latest sixth generation AWS Nitro cards. T8i instances are available in four sizes: nano, micro, small, and medium and are designed for workloads requiring low to moderate CPU utilization, including batch processing, event driven functions, CI/CD pipelines, microservices, and low traffic websites. For customers new to AWS or migrating from on-premises environments, T8i instances provides one of the most cost-effective entry points to the cloud.

T8i instances deliver up to 30% better price performance compared to previous generation T3 instances. T8i instances provide a baseline level of CPU performance with the ability to burst CPU usage at any time for as long as required. They use the same CPU credit system as T3, including Standard and Unlimited modes. Existing customers can upgrade by simply changing their instance type and immediately benefit from better price performance.

Features

Powered by the AWS Nitro System and custom sixth generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors, T8i instances enable customers to lower their total cost of ownership with up to 30% better price performance.

T8i instances deliver up to 70% higher compute performance, 1.25x higher network bandwidth, and 2.4x higher EBS bandwidth compared to T3 instances. For customers new to AWS or migrating from on-premises, T8i instances provide one of the most cost-effective entry points to run workloads that need low-to- moderate CPU utilization or for running short-duration compute tasks such as batch processing, event- driven functions, or CI/CD pipelines.

T8i instances are available in four sizes (nano, micro, small, medium) and are designed for workloads requiring low to moderate CPU utilization, including batch processing, event driven functions, CI/CD pipelines, microservices, and low traffic websites. For workloads that need larger instance sizes or higher sustained compute performance, Amazon EC2 M8i-flex instances provide up to 30% better price performance compared to previous-generation equivalent instances with the flexibility to scale up to 16xlarge size.

T8i instances work by providing a baseline level of CPU performance to address many common workloads while providing the ability to burst above the baseline for times when more performance is required. T8i instances make use of credits to track how much CPU is used. T8i instances accumulate CPU credits when a workload is operating below the baseline threshold and uses credits when running above the baseline threshold. T8i instances are unlike any other burstable instance available in the market today since customers can sustain high CPU performance, whenever and however long required.

T8i instances launch in Unlimited mode by default, giving customers the ability to sustain high CPU performance over any time frame while keeping costs as low as possible. For most general-purpose workloads, T8i Unlimited instances provide ample performance without any additional charges. If the average CPU utilization of a T8i instance remains below the baseline over a 24-hour period, the hourly instance price automatically covers all interim spikes in usage. For workloads that need to run at higher CPU utilization for a prolonged period, a small additional charge per vCPU-hour applies. Customers can also choose Standard mode, where a T8i instance bursts until it exhausts its earned credits.

T8i instances are built on the AWS Nitro System, a rich collection of building blocks that offloads many of the traditional virtualization functions to dedicated hardware. By doing so, the AWS Nitro System enables high performance, high availability, and high security while also reducing virtualization overhead.

T8i instances accumulate CPU credits when operating below baseline threshold. One CPU credit is equal to one vCPU running at 100% utilization for one minute. See T8i Unlimited documentation for details on CPU Credits and how they work.
