The eighth annual AWS Imagine conference for education, state, and local government leaders kicked off in Chicago today. Taking place in the Windy City for the first time, attendees will partake in a day-and-a-half of programming that explores how education and government customers can innovate on behalf of those they serve. Kim Majerus, AWS Vice President of Global Education and US State and Local Government, delivered the keynote address, which focused on how AWS is helping reframe, retrain, and reenergize public sector organizations. The Center for Digital Government and the Center for Digital Education (CDG/CDE) and AWS Champions Awards honor AWS customers who are setting new standards for innovation in the public sector. Curated by the CDG/CDE, this annual awards program recognizes visionary public and private sector organizations across state and local government (SLG), K–12, and higher education that are using the power of cloud computing to deliver better, faster, and more inclusive services.

U.S. State and Local Government (SLG) organizations often have requirements to host regulated workloads with distinct compliance requirements. Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides U.S. SLG customers with an approach to meet compliance needs by using AWS GovCloud (US) regions or AWS U.S. commercial regions. In this post, we will explain how some U.S. SLG regulated workloads can be hosted in the AWS U.S. commercial regions.

Justice and public safety agencies and their solution providers are building highly available, resilient, and secure applications on AWS at a rapid pace. As these solutions are built, AWS’s innovative features and security controls can help customers comply with the latest Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy updates, and align with CJIS compliance not only in AWS GovCloud (US), but also in AWS (US) Commercial regions. Customers can confidently deploy CJIS workloads in either AWS (US) Region, while maintaining access to simple and powerful cloud native tools to manage the full lifecycle of sensitive data.

AWS today announced 13 startup companies selected to participate in the inaugural AWS GovTech Accelerator. Launched in June at the AWS Summit in Washington, D.C., the Accelerator supports government technology (GovTech) startups as they develop innovative solutions enabling justice and public safety agencies to better serve their communities.

With new funding opportunities available, now is the time for state and local government agencies to act quickly and think strategically about their approach to building a resilient whole-of-state (WOS) cybersecurity strategy. Some trailblazing states have had measures of success in establishing a WOS footprint by thinking strategically about short and long-term outcomes to support secure digital transformations and protect constituent data and services. With state Medicaid agencies (SMAs) contacting all their members, contact centers must scale to meet increased demand—however, staffing shortages can make this outreach and call support difficult. SMAs can support staff members and make sure members get their communications needs met by using AWS and cloud technology to introduce automation into their outreach process. Learn how to deploy a serverless outbound campaign to meet Medicaid unwinding outreach needs and support agency staff members by streamlining the outreach process.

Reducing food insecurity and increasing access to healthy foods is a major priority for state and federal agencies. Accelerating this work requires action and collaboration from state and local governments, the private sector, and more. AWS, Amazon Access, and state and local agencies are teaming up to rethink how to make eating healthy simple, nutritious, and cost-effective.

From July 11-12, 2023, the IMAGINE: Education, State, and Local Leaders conference from AWS gathered public sector leaders from around the world in Sacramento, CA to reimagine the future of state and local government and education. At the keynote address, Kim Majerus, vice president of global education and US state and local government at AWS, shared stories of education and state and local organizations using cloud technology to provide meaningful services for their communities. Three guest speakers joined the stage to share how they’re using AWS to protect education services against the rising threat of cyber attacks, advance cutting-edge research, promote innovative citizen services, and more.

AWS announced the winners of the inaugural State and Local Government (SLG) Champions Awards at the AWS Imagine Conference in Sacramento, California. The SLG Champions join the AWS Education Champions community, which was launched last year. The Champions program celebrates public sector agencies whose work empowers innovation and transformation in education and government using the AWS Cloud.
