The year 2024 was filled with both excitement and thoughtful consideration in the nonprofit sector as the world seeks to understand and apply transformative cloud technologies such as generative artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance impact and increase productivity. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is privileged to work alongside organizations in the social sector who are using these tools for the benefit of people and our planet, and who are leading conversations about how to do it responsibly. We’re proud to announce that many of those organizations are AWS IMAGINE Grant winners, representing our largest cohort of recipients to date.

Satellite Resiliency for AWS Outposts offers a comprehensive, Partner-managed solution for resilient cloud-connected edge computing that extends the reach of Amazon Web Services (AWS) to the most remote and geographically dispersed environments on earth. AWS Outposts typically run connected to a parent AWS Region for resource management, access control, and software updates. When terrestrial network connectivity between an Outpost and its parent AWS Region is unavailable, this solution routes traffic back to the parent Region over a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connection, supporting business continuity and data residency requirements.

In October 2024, at Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud Day Malaysia, the region’s AWS Skills to Jobs Tech Alliance was launched. In collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the Tech Alliance aims to modernize tech programs of study at Malaysian higher education institutions, connect learners to in-demand tech jobs, and support the development of a highly-skilled tech workforce.

Leaders in higher education recognize that generative artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), cloud computing, and other advanced technologies are rapidly changing how education and research happen on campus. Whether through data-driven administrative decision-making, generative AI infrastructure for research, or enhanced learning tools for the classroom, higher education institutions are developing and applying technology in innovative and helpful ways. Some of these examples will be shared at the EDUCAUSE Annual Conference from October 21-24 in San Antonio.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is proud to be a healthcare and technology partner for the Cancer AI Alliance (CAIA), a new initiative announced today. The CAIA is a consortium of four National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers, led by the Fred Hutch Cancer Center, and leading technology and service companies. AWS is contributing a total of $10 million towards the more than $40 million in funding that helps establish the CAIA.

On September 11, 2024, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the launch of the Provincial and Municipal Cyber Grant Program across Canada at the AWS Summit in Toronto. To help provincial and municipal governments implement cloud-based cybersecurity solutions, AWS is investing $5 million CAD in AWS credits to new and existing AWS customers.

At re:Invent 2022, AWS announced the winners of this year’s AWS IMAGINE Grant. Winners receive not only unrestricted funding, but also access to training and expert technical guidance. Although they represent diverse mission areas, each organization is committed to innovating with the cloud, using data to fuel their missions, and scaling access to vital services through cloud-enabled, digital tools. Meet this year’s winning nonprofits.

In India, the Quantum Computing Applications Lab (QCAL), a collaboration between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and AWS, announced that it will strengthen its scientific research and industry focus for its second cohort, through new support from the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India, as well as Indian advanced technology consultancies and AWS Partners Mphasis and Fractal. The MeitY QCAL will accept applications for the second cohort later this month.

AWS announced the availability of Wickr RAM (Recall, Alert and Messaging) to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) through Cloud One, which is a cloud hosting infrastructure and service. Wickr RAM is an end-to-end encrypted full suite collaboration application built for the warfighter. It is available on AWS GovCloud (US) and can support workloads up to Impact Level 5.

At the IMAGINE 2022 conference in Seattle, Washington, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the inaugural class of the AWS Education Champions community. The AWS Education Champions community is a new program to celebrate and support influential individuals whose work accelerates the digital transformation of education with the AWS Cloud. The 10 inaugural Champions are nationally recognized speakers and authors who inspire the next generation of educational leaders.
