Impetus LeapLogic™: Automating Legacy Workflow Migrations to Amazon MWAA

This post is co-written with Gurvinder Arora and Utkarsh Jain from Impetus LeapLogic™ Technologies.

Introduction

Impetus LeapLogic™ is a cloud transformation accelerator designed to simplify, automate, and expedite legacy migration to modern cloud ecosystems. It translates workloads from traditional data warehouses, ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load), BI (Business Intelligence) reports, Hadoop, scheduled batch jobs and other environments into optimized, cloud-native formats, minimizing manual efforts and risks. Impetus LeapLogic™ enables end-to-end transition with compatibility, scalability, and enhanced performance, tailored for leading cloud providers, and is engineered to facilitate end-to-end digital transformation in complex enterprise landscapes.

In this post we explore how Impetus LeapLogic™’s end-to-end automated migration solution enables accelerated transformation from proprietary orchestration solutions like BMC Control-M and Broadcom AutoSys, to cloud native open source managed service: Amazon Managed Workflows for Apache Airflow (Amazon MWAA). We highlight some of the challenges of using the legacy tools, propose a migration lifecycle and show the benefits of the automation through the lens of a customer story.

Limitations with Legacy Orchestration Tooling

In an era where agility, scalability, and efficiency are paramount to staying competitive, legacy orchestration tools reveal their limitations in supporting evolving business needs. Traditionally established solutions struggle to meet the demands of modern workflows and infrastructure, especially as businesses increasingly transition to cloud environments and embrace DevOps methodologies. As such, the limitations of these tools do more than hinder IT processes—they directly impact business agility, cost-effectiveness, and resilience in a fast-paced digital landscape. The following table lists some of the limitations with legacy orchestration tooling.

Closed source software Limited access to community-driven support, slower innovation cycles, and restricted customization.
Limited cloud-native capabilities Lack support for cloud-native features such as elastic scaling, pay-per-use pricing, serverless architecture, easy accessibility, easy maintenance and upgrades; making integration with cloud infrastructures challenging and limiting the ability to leverage hybrid or multi-cloud environments.
Performance issues with large-scale workflows Often face performance bottlenecks at scale, which can delay workflows, impair efficiency, and limit reliability under high workloads.
Manual configurations Require labor-intensive manual configuration, adding administrative overhead and increasing the likelihood of configuration errors. This limits agility and responsiveness to change.
Less intuitive UI with lower usability Have dated, complex interfaces that hinder user experience, slowing down onboarding and decreasing operational efficiency for teams.
Limited elasticity Lack dynamic scalability, making it difficult to optimize resource usage in response to fluctuating workloads or evolving operational demands.
Expensive licensing cost Licensing fees are often high, creating significant ongoing costs that scale with the size and complexity of workflows.
Lacks AI and anomaly detection features The absence of AI-driven insights and anomaly detection prevents proactive identification, investigation and remediation of potential issues, increasing the likelihood of downtime.

With the migration architecture and best practices in place, we now turn to a real-world scenario that demonstrates the transformative impact of this migration strategy, illustrated through the journey of a valued customer.

Customer Story

A leading provider of financial information, analytics, and credit ratings company wanted to migrate their legacy AutoSys to Amazon MWAA service. The client wanted to leverage open community advantages, reduce operating costs, enable elasticity, and migrate the end-to-end stack to AWS native cloud stack.

Impetus LeapLogic™ auto-converted 1248 AutoSys jobs across two business units with ~90% automation to meet expected performance SLAs. The tech stack used was Amazon MWAA, Amazon S3, and Python.

The project started with a detailed assessment of the existing AutoSys workloads. Impetus LeapLogic™’s assessment module identified the entire inventory, conducted the complexity analysis, and identified interdependencies between workloads. The assessment stage also helped create a robust migration plan based on the dependencies. Next, within the transformation stage, all the AutoSys jobs were successfully auto-transformed. To handle custom calendars and certain AutoSys properties, customized Python scripts were created as per the scheduling frequency.

Post-transformation, all the jobs were thoroughly validated by the customer team before promoting to production environments. Additionally, the Impetus LeapLogic™ team integrated ServiceNow with the transformed jobs to track and manage issues, changes, and problems. Further the customer received operational training and handover.

The migration of legacy AutoSys jobs to Amazon MWAA successfully enabled the client to leverage the flexibility and scalability of AWS’s native cloud services, achieving seamless operational efficiency, 50%+ cost savings, reducing overall effort by more than 50% than manual migration within an end-to-end 10-week timeframe. This project underscores the transformative power of cloud migration in modernizing legacy systems. At the same time, Impetus LeapLogic™’s end-to-end support provided the foundation for a smooth transition to a robust, future-ready architecture.
