AWS strengthens its position in mainframe modernization with innovative AI-powered solutions and proven customer success
“AWS offers the broadest portfolio with AWS Blu Age and partner tools. It supports clients with skilled consultants and a wide ecosystem throughout their modernization and cloud optimization for performance, security and compliance.” – Pedro L. Bicudo Maschio, Distinguished Analyst and Author, ISG
ISG named Amazon Web Services (AWS) a leader in the ISG Provider Lens Mainframe Application Modernization Software U.S. quadrant 2025 report.
This recognition extends the AWS leadership position in mainframe modernization for another consecutive year. It showcases both our proven capabilities driving successful customer modernization projects and the portfolio breadth with the addition of AWS Transform for transforming mainframe workloads.
We continue to see large enterprise customers across the globe, such as Transamerica, Allianz, and Marriott Hotels, trust AWS for the modernization of their most critical mainframe-based workloads.
The 2025 ISG Provider Lens™ study evaluated 21 software vendors across two critical dimensions: competitive strength and portfolio attractiveness. This comprehensive analysis examined providers’ ability to meet growing customer demands for accelerated transformation of legacy mainframe applications, while addressing the complexity and technological diversity within the mainframe ecosystem. AWS stood out for its comprehensive solution portfolio, continuous innovation, and proven customer outcomes.
AWS Transform transformation capabilities for mainframe
AWS Transform for mainframe is the first agentic AI experience for mainframe, helping customers accelerate the mainframe modernization journey. AWS deploys specialized agents to automate complex tasks to analyze the codebase, generates documentation, decomposes monolithic structures, transforms the legacy code, and manages the overall modernization journey. It also uses human inputs only when needed.
AWS Transform helps customers and partners accelerate their mainframe modernization projects through an agentic framework that abstracts the complexity associated with the end-to-end modernization tasks. AWS Transform automates critical tasks leveraging AI trained on Amazon’s 19 years of experience migrating tens of thousands of customers to the cloud. Time-consuming operations such as building detailed documentation for mainframe programs and decomposing monolithic applications into logical business groupings or functions can be executed at speed.
Announced at re:Invent 2024, AWS Transform for mainframe reflects AWS commitment to continue to innovate and build on behalf of mainframe customers. Mainframe modernizations have historically been multi-year projects. With AWS Transform, we see these projects moving from multi-year to multi-quarter efforts, giving mainframe customers the confidence to exit their legacy platforms and innovate with AWS.
AWS Mainframe Modernization capabilities
AWS has helped customers like Transamerica migrate their mainframe systems to AWS, increasing batch performance by 30%, and customers like Visma achieve 55% annual cost savings. AWS makes these success stories possible by providing customers with innovative tools and services to facilitate analyzing, migrating, and transforming their mainframe applications. AWS lets customers use Refactor and Replatform patterns, providing options for customers to transform mainframe applications into Java or COBOL applications using relational databases on AWS. Customers gain detailed insights into their applications and data, and access to over 200 AWS cloud services post-migration.
AWS offers specialized accelerators that help customers meet their mainframe modernization goals. For instance, the data replication capability provides near real-time synchronization of legacy mainframe data to AWS, allowing organizations to develop new functionalities, implement modern reporting systems, and leverage AI/ML capabilities. Also, file transfer capabilities streamline the movement of files to the cloud, expanding data modernization possibilities. Finally, the Assembler conversion capability simplifies the transformation of mainframe Assembler code into either COBOL or Java during migration projects, reducing modernization complexity.
