Migration & Modernization

Accelerate migration planning with assessments in AWS Transform

We are excited to announce the release of the assessment capability of AWS Transform. Migration assessments are an important early step in any organization’s migration journey as they help reduce cost and accelerate migration planning so you can realize migration objectives more quickly.

A migration assessment empowers organizations to understand their on-premises infrastructure footprint by analyzing server provisioning and operating system licensing. Assessments also give decision makers the confidence they need to commit to a migration and help organizations optimize their server footprint, which can reduce costs by as much as 60% (Bain & Company, “Rightsizing your way to the cloud”). Assessment results can also be used to help understand whether you qualify for AWS programs and incentives, such as the Migration Acceleration Program (MAP).

AWS Transform for migration assessments has been built on 19 years of AWS experience. A migration assessment can help you simplify and accelerate your transformation journey without the need to manually review server data. AWS Transform removes the guess work in transformation planning by using AI to generate a data-driven Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) business case in minutes, including actionable next steps, to help you start your migration and allowing you to ask the AI agent questions about the assessment results.

Create your own custom assessment with AWS Transform

AWS Transform allows you to quickly start an assessment — all you need is your server inventory list. AWS Transform supports exports from RVTools or the AWS Migration Evaluator agentless collector as well as the AWS Migration Portfolio Assessment (MPA) export format from ModelizeIT and Cloudamize.

After uploading your server inventory, AWS Transform allows you to set your target AWS region and, when you’re ready, simply instruct AWS Transform to generate your business case. AWS Transform will then use AI to analyze your server inventory, and will find the best-fit, lowest cost, Amazon EC2 instance for each server.

The resulting business case includes key opportunities & benefits as identified by AWS Transform, provides a snapshot of current inventory and operating system licensing, outlines multiple pricing options for cost comparison and highlights suggested next steps based on the provided data. To help understand the business case and results, you can ask the AWS Transform AI agent for clarification about what was included in the assessment, why it picked certain instances, or for additional details about the suggested next steps.

When you’re done reviewing your business case within the AWS Transform web experience, you’ll also have the option to export a PDF allowing you to take the data offline for review with key stakeholders. Should you want to ask additional questions about the assessment, you can return to your existing job in AWS Transform, or, if you have additional server inventory to assess, you can start a new assessment job.
