ADMIRAL Technologies migrates for international expansion to AWS
In a crowded sports betting market, delivering a standout experience is essential to keeping users engaged. It’s an area where Austria-based B2B technology provider ADMIRAL Technologies excels. With technology now powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Admiral developed a scalable and secure solution that ensures sports betting operators have all the tools they need to deliver the experience customers expect.
“Moving to AWS from an on-premises infrastructure was a smooth migration and has given us the flexibility to expand into new geographic markets really fast, without ordering new hardware or paying for hardware we don’t need,” noted Peter Weiss, ADMIRAL Technologies Division Head of Product Operations. “At first, our priority was to complete the transition from on premises to the cloud, but now we’re entering our modernization phase using native services directly from AWS.”
Achieving scalability and stability
ADMIRAL Technologies originated as the development arm of ADMIRAL Sportwetten, a multi-platform sports betting operator in Austria. Its solution powers betting applications for operator customers, whether accessed through personal devices, through dedicated terminal devices and direct interaction with shop employees in a business, or on standalone kiosks. When the company built its original tech stack on premises in a data center, it was only serving a specific geography. As it began to consider serving operators in more other countries, its team quickly ran into scalability issues.
According to industry analyst reports, sports betting continues to show significant growth potential. For sports betting operators, this boom introduces new monetization opportunities. Procuring more hardware would take time they don’t have, and provisioning resources in an unproven market could result in unnecessary overspending.
“International expansion drives our strategic vision, demanding agile infrastructure that empowers us to seize market opportunities instantly – without the constraints of legacy on-premises systems holding us back,” explained Weiss. “In sports betting, delivering seamless, real-time experiences isn’t just a nice-to-have – it’s essential for customer engagement and advantage. We needed the flexibility to enter new markets and scale dynamically to support our growth ambitions.”
Ensuring platform stability was also a critical concern, as any performance hiccups could lead to clients seeking alternative platforms. Weiss and his team first worked to secure executive buy-in for a cloud pivot. They chose AWS for its extensive technical expertise in cloud computing, proven track record of delivering secure and scalable infrastructure solutions, and experience supporting diverse regulated industries
They turned to AWS Enterprise Support and AWS Partner Nagarro to support the migration and implement of a phased 18-month plan. ADMIRAL Technologies, working with Nagarro as their migration partner and AWS as their cloud provider, built a solution that addressed their scalability requirements. The resulting architecture enabled them to better manage traffic fluctuations, reduce latency, and enhance their operational capabilities.
With the AWS infrastructure ready, ADMIRAL Technologies switched over its platform without missing a beat. The teams seamlessly migrated over 100 servers, 6 TB of data and database storage, 130 critical reports, and around 8,300 Terraform resources to AWS using Terraform modules and GitLab CI templates, confirming a systematic and controlled transition.
Now, ADMIRAL Technologies can swiftly scale their sports betting products for any new market, shortening the launch timeline from months to days. The first demonstration of this came in February 2025 when ADMIRAL Technologies successfully launched capabilities for a licensed operator in Switzerland, completed overnight.
Evolving with AI
In parallel to its expansion, ADMIRAL Technologies also began working with AWS AI services. Presently, the company is using Amazon SageMaker AI for various machine learning applications. They are also using the managed generative AI service Amazon Bedrock to support the company’s development lifecycle and as a secure and reliable internal enterprise chatbot solution for the whole ADMIRAL group. Additionally, it’s looking at customer-facing AI applications, such as service support for operators or adding new features for bettors. Building on Amazon Bedrock, ADMIRAL Technologies uses several large language models, including Amazon Nova and third-party large language models from Amazon Bedrock Marketplace.
“AI is important to our long-term strategy. It helps us enhance engineering and testing productivity, but we must retain data ownership and maintain a secure environment, which we’re able to do with Amazon Bedrock,” noted Weiss.
Weiss estimates that ADMIRAL Technologies uses at least 35 AWS services daily, with Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) as the main implementation for the platform. The ADMIRAL Technologies team has built around 300 microservices with 850 instances in production on top of Amazon EKS to comprise its sports betting platform. Additionally, the team uses Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) resources and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), as well as AWS observability and security services.
“Trust is paramount to successful sports betting operators. They must protect their customers’ money, and data, and be able to transact payouts immediately. Our customers trust us because we ensure a secure, stable, and reliable environment while complying with country-specific legal requirements. This is an important foundation for deciding which partners and technologies we want to use to achieve this, and why we chose AWS,” Weiss emphasized.
Remaining agile
Beyond its current implementation, the ADMIRAL Technologies team is considering building with other AWS services that would support continued growth as it expands into new markets. While the company is keeping the specifics of its next moves under wraps, it’s safe to bet that AWS will continue to play a core role.
