What do you like best about the product?
As a long-time user of IBM Db2, using it for 15 years now, I've found several standout features that make it a reliable choice for our database needs. The stability of Db2 is impressive; it handles our high-transaction environment with ease. Scalability is a strong suit, allowing us to grow seamlessly alongside our expanding data requirements. Security features are robust, meeting our standards for protecting sensitive data.

The compatibility with various platforms makes integration smooth, and the support for advanced analytics and AI integration has been beneficial for deriving meaningful insights. The availability of comprehensive documentation and a supportive community ensures we can troubleshoot effectively and stay updated.

What stands out most is the flexibility in supporting both SQL and NoSQL models, giving us the freedom to adapt to different use cases. Overall, our experience with IBM Db2 has been positive, thanks to its reliability, scalability, security features, and continuous support and innovation
What do you dislike about the product?
My experience with IBM Db2 over the years has been marked by a notable gap in user-friendly tools, especially when compared to SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). The absence of an equivalent tool has been a source of frustration, particularly in areas such as auditing, query tuning, and monitoring. The auditing feature feels outdated, requiring considerable manual effort. Query tuning lacks the streamlined approach found in SSMS, and the absence of a tool akin to SSMS's activity monitor means delving into scripts for essential reports.

In a landscape where many databases showcase activities through elegant GUI screens, the reliance on scripts for reports feels antiquated. Unlike SSMS, where obtaining an explain plan is a single click away, DB2 demands a more complex process involving plan generation, interpretation, and decision-making. Additionally, the use of Java for GUIs presents a performance challenge, with slow loading times.

This experience highlights a perceived stagnation in tool development for DB2, necessitating heavy dependence on the expertise of a DBA rather than leveraging tools for simplified day-to-day activities. While DB2 offers robust features, the user interface and toolset development seem to lag behind, making routine tasks more labor-intensive than they need to be.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
DB2 stands out as highly dependable software, showcasing exceptional reliability and robustness. Its ability to efficiently handle substantial workloads, including multi-terabytes of data, is a testament to its prowess in managing data-intensive operations with ease.

High performing database system

  • May 26, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
When I work with a DBA and they help me to setup indexes on large data sets, the performance improvement is jaw dropping. I love how performant DB2 is. Actually, it was the first database I used for my career, and anytime I need to use other databases, I am shocked to see their lacking performance.
What do you dislike about the product?
The user interface from 2010 has now been decommissioned, it was truly an ugly user interface, but it was effective for getting things done if you don't know the complete set of commands.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Provides the backbone of a high-performant service-oriented architecture. We need the system to handle as many transactions per second as possible, and we are able to get thousands per second. Thats for read and commit! Truly amazing performance.
