Great flexible PaaS hosting

  • February 25, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Platform.sh is super flexible and can be modified to fit most needs. Its git-based workflow is really easy to use and I can get things deployed with just a commit which is super awesome! It has a build process in the deployment so you don't need to use a 3rd service like CircleCI, Travis, or Jenkins to build your app. It's supports a variety of programming languages and services. It's particularly useful to have this flexibility as the modern web becomes less monolithic so you can provision only the resources you need. By having a lean app, we've found our costs are a fair amount less than the competition (Acquia and Pantheon). The flexibility has meant elements of our site that didn't work on Pantheon work again — hurray! A year or so ago they have improved their UI and it's made a huge difference to the usability and navigation of your site's dashboard.
What do you dislike about the product?
The support and documentation although much better than it used to be, is still pretty lacklustre. I always go to the docs first but I often struggle to find or understand the answers they provide. When I need to create a ticket, I often find that their support personnel are slow to respond to anything that isn't critical and once they've responded initially the replies are even slower. They also often defer issues on to you (saying it's an app/code issue or you need to upgrade) rather than help solve the issue where it might be how code is interacting with the infrastructure. Having come from Acquia there is a lot of room from improvement here. There are a few other niggles, it's very sysadmin/devops based if you've never managed a server before it can be quite a daunting learning curve. The git-based deploys aren't useful for built SSRs as you can't trigger a build via a webhook or API (a la Netlify). Finally, it requires management from your end implement a caching level and monitor resources usages such as disk usage.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I started building out a bespoke Docker/Kubernetes setup. I found that Platform.sh provided the majority of the features for a fraction of the setup.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Go with it! you won't regret it!

What do you like best about the product?
Not having to worry about deployments or infrastructure management.
Having peace of mind knowing there's an experienced team of dedicated devops support engineers who actively monitor my cluster health and who I can rely on when things go wrong.
What do you dislike about the product?
The non-critical support waiting time can be too long at times.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm using Platform.sh enterprise to host a fashion website.
They provide the infrastructure required to run the application.

Still learning

  • February 25, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Site loads quickly, still learning and discovering capabilities.
What do you dislike about the product?
Needed to learn how to use staging sites, publishing with GIT. Can't give responsibility for anything remotely technical as this is not the 'update via ftp' route any longer.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our website was old, we needed a visual makeover but also a site that was less static. Needed a CMS to allow non-tech people to publish content easily.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
be familiar with GIT

Workflows!

  • February 25, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The best part of Platform.sh is workflow capabilities. This has allowed us to iterate faster than we ever have before. Having multiple dev environments created from Git branches is really great.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not being able to sync data from one environment to the next via the dashboard. This would be handly to sync the dev environments with production more easily for not so high-level users.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Server maintenance, hosting, scalability
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would recommend test driving Platform.sh first before any commitments are made. Depending on the type of application, Platform.sh may be able to give you some extra resources for the testing phase if you contact them first.

Simple & performant hosting solution

  • February 25, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Very easy to set-up and easy to manage. I also like the free tier that allows developers to have a play with Platform.sh before making a purchase, and if needed, it's possible to turn a sandbox environment into a production site! Everything is easy to manage & configure. The user interface is very modern and easy to use, even for new people that are added to teams. There is also a lot of support documentation available which really helps if you're trying to configure something specific.

The architecture is really nice and very flexible, it's just not your average FTP hosting but you really get something with Platform. It's possible to also very easy to manage external dependencies with the use of Composer. I think it's difficult to list things that can't be done with Platform.sh making this an ideal platform for a lot of you websites. The CI tools and possibilities you get are really amazing!
What do you dislike about the product?
For smaller projects/personal project I think the pricing is a bit too high. Although it's really feature riche, I can't justify spending 50€ a month for a personal website or for a smaller client for example. Maybe it would be a good idea to also offer an XS or XXS package with 2 environments instead of 4 to reduce cost.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Easy management of environments, simple deployments and stable environments. I really loved the speed I was able to create & configure a brand new website. Performance has been great and I haven't had any downtime, ever.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you want a lot of flexibility, but don't want to do everything yourself like AWS/Google cloud, Platform.sh is perfect for you because you still have a lot of flexibility, but the hard work is done by the team.

Easy to setup a complex eZ CMS Enterprise system

  • February 25, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The well designed UI and of course the very competent support staff. The Configuration is pretty self explaining and the documentation is well written.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the DEV Instances are a bit slow with the default eZ setup. But his mostly relates to the default config provided by eZ systems.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We can deliver a full CMS project within a very short time period. Time to market with platform.sh can be really fast!

Perfect platform to host your app

  • February 25, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Platform.sh itself is very flexible. You can upgrade the PHP version or add an extension just by changing one single line in the configurations. Also, you can very easy to fire up a bunch of services (Solr/Redis/Varnish/etc)
and will not require any k8s/docker knowledge. And their support is very responsive and helpful.
What do you dislike about the product?
This one is very hard to answer. I still can not find an answer after thinking a few minutes.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
After migrating to Platform.sh we forgot about managing the servers for most of our customers. And it just made our life much more enjoyable.

New user and enjoying it!

  • February 25, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the multiple environments and that I can easily run testing sites while not affecting my main site.
What do you dislike about the product?
I am still new, but I think the interface could use a little redesign for user ease, however that could simply be a new user issue.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I usually have issues with running testing sites for beta users on other platforms, but .sh was simple to set up for users to assess mock sites without having to release my main URL.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure to research the amount of possibilities for your implementation and have fun rolling out your next project.

What do you like best about the product?
Fair pricing and responsive tech support. Scalable systems.
What do you dislike about the product?
Occasional slow responses when tech support staff is busy.
