Support improves setup and maintenance while pricing influences decision

  • May 23, 2025
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

We work at the banks. The bank has many IBM products. IBM Db2 Database is just one of them. It is mostly mainframes, but there are still some relational databases, such as IBM Db2 Warehouse, that we are interested in purchasing for financial companies.

Because we are a big client, we have a good price with IBM Db2 Database.

Based on my use case and understanding, performance-wise, Oracle is probably better because they may have better technology. However, for us it is acceptable since we do not use it extensively, so there is no real difference for us.

What is most valuable?

We mostly use the core Oracle database.

IBM Db2 Database is perfect and leading in this area.

Regarding how IBM Db2 Database can improve, I do not have anything in mind as our use cases are not complicated. There is PostgreSQL and SQL Server available. IBM Db2 Database, because of enterprise performance and support, is why banks still maintain their relationship with it. I am uncertain whether other companies do the same, but banks do.

What needs improvement?

IBM is implementing some release improvements. It might be slightly slower than other database vendors, but it works well since banks typically do not move quickly with leading-edge technology.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have no complaints, and I would rate it between eight and nine.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There is not much maintenance required.

How are customer service and support?

Since the bank is a big client of IBM, we normally receive very good support and substantial discounts on the price.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have some Oracle products. Oracle performs well but is becoming very expensive. The major concern is the cost, and there are other products that are much cheaper replacements with minimal performance degradation. That is why many companies are moving away from Oracle, at least for relational database use cases.

What other advice do I have?

If you have a similar use case and the same deal with IBM as our company, it is definitely a good option and choice. The company I work with has more than 50,000 people and more than 500 support staff. We are not locked into one database vendor. We typically work with multiple database vendors simultaneously, selecting the top choice based on the deals we make and other considerations.

We do not use IBM Db2 Database related to AI at this moment because our AI project PLC is still very small scale. We may consider it in the future if we have enough scale.

Overall rating for IBM Db2 Database is 8.5 out of 10.

The best SQL platform as long as Mainframes are relevant

  • October 18, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have worked on 2 different SQL platforms previously (Microsoft and Adobe). I have been using DB2 for the past one year since I started working in the BFS domain. The best thing I like about DB2 is how seamlessly it integrates with COBOL program with just the use of a SQLCA section. Apart from the common select, update or insert another feature I really love is the cursor feature and fetch options. It helps to navigate the database and choose the exact plan number or ssn relevant to that COBOL code .
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes I came across compilation errors when I try to execute COBOL codes using the DCLGEN utility for DB2.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
IBM DB2 is the only source of SQL in mainframe systems. So whenever I need to work with the view or the table itself I use DB2 to seamlessly connect with the COBOL application.

IMB great database for the past.

  • October 10, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It was my first approach to database and it feels so unsupported some regular expression at least where I use it won't work like regex_like. Also it's a cheaper solution for small company. Also easier to integrate with odbc.
What do you dislike about the product?
Unsupported feature. The version I'm running has some lack.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This database was unuse to end-user due to its complexity, as a data engineer I start to translate those users need and provide data solutions, without having them touching the database.

A database solution for core banking with competitive pricing

  • May 30, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

IBM Db2 is a database for our core banking. We extract data from Db2 and put it in the data warehouse.

How has it helped my organization?

The main database platform is for core banking. It covers vulnerabilities.

What is most valuable?

The structure is straightforward, consisting of the test file and the logical and physical files. You have one physical file and many logical files related to it.

Banks use it which indicates that the security and compliance features are quite good.

What needs improvement?

The data table names are very short which is not user friendly compared to the Oracle SQL server. It should have longer column and table names.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using IBM Db2 Database for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution’s stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable depending on the IBM hardware you're using. IBM has also operation for Unix hardware. 1,000 users are using this solution.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Oracle is very good product compared to Db2. We have used Postgre too.

How was the initial setup?

Deployment is vert fast. It takes eight hours to complete. It depends on what path you're doing. IBM provides training.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product has a competitive pricing.

What other advice do I have?

The solution depends on the use case. It is reliable and scalable.
Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Offers optimizer plan and ALSM features along with exceptional stability

  • May 24, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

The IBM Db2 Database in our organization is used for diverse industry clients, including the banking and entertainment sectors. The solution has been used for OLTP and warehousing in our company.

What is most valuable?

The optimizer plan feature of IBM Db2 Database offers great value. At our company, whenever we check access to a particular query, the aforementioned features assist us internally by providing a suitable plan. The newly added feature of ALSM is one of the top features of IBM Db2 Database.

What needs improvement?

The TSA version of IBM Db2 Database doesn't meet my stability expectations. Every time when a switch over occurs, some stability issues can be noticed.

The vendor should offer a free version of IBM Db2 Database. For instance, if our company wants to train new individuals on all the features of IBM Db2 Database, they can only be trained after purchasing the paid version of the solution. About ten years ago, a trial version was available for the solution that was highly beneficial for companies.

The vendor can add AI or ML features in the future version of IBM Db2 Database.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using IBM Db2 Database for 17 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability an eight out of ten. The solution is majorly used in banking domains.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The pureScale and DPF features of the solution allow immense scaling. For huge environments and setups, the IBM Db2 Database works ideally. I would rate the scalability an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The solutions provider offers decent support, but on rare occasions, the wait time is longer. For instance, seven out of ten times, I have received satisfactory support over a call from customer support of IBM Db2 Database. I would rate customer support a seven out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

We haven't faced any challenges with deploying the solution at our company. Whenever an update arrives, it's downloaded and installed in our organization from the Password Advantage account and likewise is suggested to our company's clients.

The deployment duration of the IBM Db2 Database depends on multiple teams in our organization. When all the deployment resources are ready, including the server, labeled file system, and additional assets, the solution deployment takes just around two or three hours.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The AESE version needs to be used for availing the advanced features of IBM Db2 Database. The total cost of the solution depends upon the PVU licensing. The number of users of IBM Db2 Database varies in our organization depending upon the client we are working for. For instance, previously, there were greater numbers of users for the entertainment industry client than is required presently for a banking system.

In my experience, IBM Db2 Database is majorly used for developing applications involving critical operations due to the excellent stability offered by the solution.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have worked with Postgres and a few open-source database solutions as well. Since the last two or three years, I have noticed that the IBM Db2 Database's popularity has been minimized in comparison to other open source databases. For quick deployment requirements for new clients in our organization, Postgres is preferred over IBM Db2 Database.

What other advice do I have?

I used the compression capabilities of the solution in my last project, where 60% compression could be achieved.

IBM Db2 Database integrates seamlessly with the SAP environment. I recommend it to others due to its stability, minimal downtime, and features like Pacemaker, which allows impressive availability. For warehousing purposes, users can comfortably choose IBM Db2 Database. Overall, I would rate the product an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
