My experience with SPSS
What do you like best about the product?
The ability to do bi-variate analysis in a quick and efficient way
What do you dislike about the product?
The cost of the software. The software costs too much. IBM needs to have promotional opportunities for discounts etc
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am using the software to analyze data that will give me a better grasp of the policy arena and help me identify trends in solution based natratives
Set and customisable statistics protocols
What do you like best about the product?
Routine analysis can be programmed and there are detailed test reports.
What do you dislike about the product?
Although it is a very powerful software, certain analysis are not straightforward and need to be programmed. Without programming skills, one could end up wasting a lot of time or never figure out how to for example, conduct multilevel analysis.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We were trying to understand heterogeneous neuronal single cell data from mice. The benefit was that it of course didn't require the level of programming R requires.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Bear in mind that it is not as straightforward as Origin or GraphPad Prism. It is definitely closer to R in this regard. Not your simple graphing tool but a hardcore enough statistics software which you can automate some of your analysis with. Programming skills may be helpful.
SPSS is quick and easy, but if I could, I would learn a different stats software
What do you like best about the product?
I like that it's intuitive and I don't have to think much about how to perform various actions. It's straightforward!
What do you dislike about the product?
It's a little bit of a clunky software package, and I wish that it could do SEM.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I need to analyze data for research; I have benefited by being able to very quickly look at many of the standard psych methods
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Think about what stats you want to do before getting SPSS
An excellent tool that meets quick and efficient analysis needs
What do you like best about the product?
I like that the SPSS system is user friendly, even for those not well versed in statistics. I also appreciate that SPSS also provides excellent training for its users. This way, if I do not know how to run a certain type of test or analysis, it is simple to find the solution for it with the available training. This makes running analyses much less painful for the software users.
What do you dislike about the product?
I would like there to be more graphics capability in it. While the graphics are presented well, it would be nice to see more features. Overall, I do not have any other dislikes with this software. It is my primary statistical analysis software.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I've solved several of my research problems using the software. When I have complicated data to run, the software meets my technical needs in a quick and efficient way. I am able to run reports and print them easily. These features make it possible to efficiently present research information to a variety of audiences. I was also was able to quickly detect errors in my syntax and analysis due to the software's usability features. The ability to fix errors quickly, allows me to finish my work quickly, and this is critical when I am working within a tight research or grant proposal deadline.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would consider using IBM SPSS statistics for any data analysis needs. It is quite useful for anyone, especially for individuals without strong statistical analysis skills.
Recommend to Stats students
What do you like best about the product?
I recommend this product to all of my students. Input the type of variables and research question you have, and the system will suggest the appropriate model, then walk you through the steps. It even tells you which assumptions to look out for and how to address them. It is very clear and easy to follow.
What do you dislike about the product?
While they are adding more and more features, it is beginning to complicate the simple ones.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Because I sometimes have years between using a certain model, this product helps me refresh my memory faster. I don't have to worry that I missed a step.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Of course, R is better if you haven't started on statistics yet.
User-friendly!
What do you like best about the product?
I love that IBM SPSS Statistics is very user-friendly. You can run many different types of analyses (depending on the version you purchase), from simple regressions, ANOVAs, and MANOVAs to more advanced exploratory factor analyses and multilevel modeling/multiple regressions.
What do you dislike about the product?
As with any statistical software, there are certain limitations. To my knowledge, while you can run EFAs on SPSS, you cannot run CFAs on this software.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As an academician, this software is powerful enough to run many different types of analyses and flexible enough to meet many statistical needs.
Used extensively to analyze survey data
What do you like best about the product?
Very powerful; lots of capabilities. Powerful for data cross-tabulation and statistical analysis.
What do you dislike about the product?
Formatting of cross-tabulated data output not easy to do. Lots of features, too many and sometimes gets confusing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Cross-tabulation of survey data. Customer satisfaction surveys identified segments that are differentiable.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The most powerful package for analyzing survey data. It will meet all your needs, although there is a learning curve.
Research associate
What do you like best about the product?
Easy to use interface; options to code or run commands manually
What do you dislike about the product?
Expensive and inaccessible without a license
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Recommendations for trials and arbitrations following focus groups or mock trials
Recommendations to others considering the product:
In a mock trial setting the statistical analysis package is sufficient. I would not use the chart application for presentations as the charts look rather dated and cannot be customized to a great extent.
Software that makes sense.
What do you like best about the product?
I like using SPSS because it is well established. I can find any code or instructions I need online.
What do you dislike about the product?
It has clear limitations when it comes to advanced modeling.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I study substance use disorders and factors which support improved outcomes. SPSS allows me to create models to predict behavioral outcomes.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Identify the primary statistical approach you will need before selecting your software.
Make data analysis easier!
What do you like best about the product?
It's easy to manipulate data by creating syntax vs. using excel which can make the same tasks much more tedious
What do you dislike about the product?
The output is not presentation ready - any created tables need to reformatted and made "prettier" before it can be put into PPT or added to any reports.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Analyzing large amounts of survey data to track brand with competitors and feedback on products.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Becoming familiar with writing your own syntax - it's much faster than using the menu bar. Syntax writing is similar to SQL.
