Statistical Software for Social Science Research
What do you like best about the product?
SPSS provides users to organize, calculate, and analyze social science data. This software is so much easier to handle huge amount of data compared to excel. It can allow us to do simple calculation, descriptive analysis, correlation, regression, factor analysis, and so on. I believe that they added more analytical features such as neural network and forecasting.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only think that I don't like about this software is that their software manual provided by IBM is not easy to find the right information quickly since it has so many information. I would suggest people to find a handy books that other scientists write about how to use spss.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have large amount of data from participants in social science study, and statistical analysis is very time-consuming process without this useful software designed for this specific purpose. Benefits are minimizing our time for analysis. It records all of our steps in this software on the output sheet. So, other researchers can reproduce your outputs
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is the best statistical software for social science
spss is so fun!
What do you like best about the product?
you can use spss to analyze so many health related statistics in america. graphs and pies were my favorite features.
What do you dislike about the product?
not much. this was a really fun chapter in my career at uiuc.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
statistical analysis! it helps us understand the data we compile regarding the community's health
Recommendations to others considering the product:
bring a notebook and pen if that helps you remember how to use software for the first few times.
Great software, not the most intuitive user interface.
What do you like best about the product?
Spss is a great tool for anybody looking to do statistical analysis on large datasets. Data is very easy to insert into the program, and once you get the hang of it you can run a lot of different statistical tests on the dataset.
What do you dislike about the product?
The user interface is very clunky and windows ‘95ish. It’s difficult to find the actual test that you want to use because the user interface is so hard to use.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
At our consulting firm, we use Spss primarily to format market research data. It is invaluable in formatting huge datasets. I’ve also used the program to run statistical analysis for difference in means and other types of tests to show statistical significance in many of our presentations.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It’s a great product. It’s important that you understand the capacity of the product before purchasing it. There are many other statistical software that you can use for free, that have similar capabilities as Spss.
Good for statistical analysis
What do you like best about the product?
I like the ease of use of SPSS and the charts and graphs that it outputs. The toolbar has almost anything you would need so it doesn't require writing any complex codes
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes it is hard to use the dropdown menu when you have many variables. There should be an easy way to find the variable than to go down the list.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use this for analyzing data for projects. It provides useful analysis using different statistical methods.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would recommend SPSS to those who want an easy to use statistical package because it is very user friendly. It doesn't require writing any complex codes
SPSS
What do you like best about the product?
I like the large breadth of available statistical analyses
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike the usability, it seems behind the times
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use this software mostly for research, and it's a largely useful tool for large datasets
Statistical analysis experience
What do you like best about the product?
I love that SPSS is so simple to use! A lot of other statistical analysis programs require coding and are a lot more intricate
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike that SPSS formats outputs that look terrible and the interface is awful
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
SPSS can run really slow sometimes! I love the built in tools for data manipulation and am very comfortable with SPSS making it easier for me to get my work done
Moderately easy to use
What do you like best about the product?
I like that there are short cuts for performing simple actions/Analyses (e.g., descriptive statistics)
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike that there are issues with copying and pasting data into the data tab and that outputs are not as customizeable as I would like (include extraneous information)
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Use it to analyze quantitative market research results and compare groups/understand key differences between groups and inform reports for clients. Useful to be able to export output to excel
Powerful and effective, if used properly.
What do you like best about the product?
PSS makes it so easy to perform complex analysis (e.g. segmenting data sets). However, I do think we underutilize SPSS and don't use it to it's fullest. This is probably due to a lack of training and understanding of it's capabilities as it can do much much more than we currently use it for.
What do you dislike about the product?
The user interface could be easier to work with as well as a better help menu to troubleshoot/answer questions. When I don't know how to do something in SPSS it is not an easy process to figure out the answer. Usually it requires a lot of confusing blogs and reading through user's posts to determine the solution instead of having a simple help menu in SPSS itself.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are largely using SPSS to format data to use in developing crosstabs from marketing research projects. We also use SPSS when segmenting our survey data in order to perform K-means analysis and other statistical algorithms.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are going to use SPSS, really know and understand it. There is SO much that it can do but it is too often under utilized.
Powerful Stats Tool for the Newcomer
What do you like best about the product?
Can provide detailed statistical analysis of data.
What do you dislike about the product?
Has some limitations. But provides enough for those who aren’t experienced at coding using R+
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Assisting psychology departments with issues while using software.
Spss for Higher Ed admin
What do you like best about the product?
Powerful tool to run analysis of 100k+ records rather than bogging down cpu processor and waiting 5 minutes for it to freeze.
What do you dislike about the product?
Pricey unless license is purchased for institution or student
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Enrollment funnel analytics, predictive modeling (regression), personality t-tests
