Mostly good some trouble with over payments or estimates
What do you like best about the product?
Online access allows flexibility of timing for my convenience. The various reports to support the tax returns are helpful (File Analysis Report and Tax Filing Report). The online message exchange also resulted in very quick responses to questions and requests for clarifications.
What do you dislike about the product?
Experience is mostly excellent and helpful in routine and in troubleshooting. One downside is resolving overestimated payments and adding new states resulting in overpayments or underpayments. The negative aspects of wrong payments is then confirming the application of overpayments to future month filings or incurring penalties for miscalculated liabilities that result in penalties that Sovos do not help to pay though it seems we pay for the services to avoid penalties. The other bad experience that was eventually resolved was a technical issue where the data file we submitted at month-end was resulting in duplicate data causing a much higher liability than the actual data supported. That took several months to resolve and may not have been Sovos's fault but I remember the Technology group expressing some frustration in getting the issue resolved (I am not part of the IT team). Adding Illinois as a new State to pay taxes to even though another Headwater entity pays tax there has been complicated. We pay quarterly and the first payment we made missed one of the accrued months, then when the missing accrued month was paid in the very next quarter the payment was duplicated so now we have a prepayment for the next quarter to be tracked and properly applied.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Sovos does provide a way to add new territories to file taxes in if we choose to add new territories in new states. Sovos does provide a good communication channel to address questions before returns are filed. There are several reports generated monthly that provide opportunities to review data and raise possible questions before the filing is due. There is a redundancy of personnel at Sovos n case the account manager will be out of the office during any month while the filing process is occurring.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be sure your IT team has good communication channel with Sovos IT team to address technical issues for file communications and proper access levels across various support personnel in your company that may need limited access.

Once the platform is in place it is relatively low maintenance.

The commitment process for tax calculations can be laborious and taxing when there are information gaps

It is benefiting us by having a platform that runs all of the background determinations.
Basic Integration for Sales Tax Needs- Customer Service Needs Work
What do you like best about the product?
fast populated results- results from website are useful in submitting sales tax to each state needed. Lots of manipulation to get correct info- but better than manual process to complete each state.
What do you dislike about the product?
customer service needs work- took 2 months to close ticket with rep; poor communication and email was "overlooked". Would have liked to resolve my issue before 2 month mark of no communication; told them to simply close ticket if they were not going to help me.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Sovos is used as a sales tax calculator- which has decreased my overall time spent on populating numbers needed to submit sales tax for each state. Would like more up-to-date webinars to explain website and features.

Respond fast, and its system is reliable and workable

After you sign with them and become their customer, next year they increase their price sharply to a very high price range. And it is very tedious and troublesome to negotiate with them. And their tax person needs to be more trained and more experienced.

Had a lot of system issues at the beginning and it took extremely long to get everything resolved and working smoothly.

I like the straightforward approach to setting up our customer's state tax exemptions for Resale and Manufacturing.

I dislike when there is a customer with multiple state exemptions, you have to add them one at a time.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows us to manage our customer's exemption information and even allows us to be proactive with the reports in determining what exemptions will expire in the near future so we can reach out to our customers for updated forms ahead of time.
