Object storage has reduced costs and improves data protection for web application workloads

  • December 12, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

My main use case for Cloudian HyperStore is S3 storage. I use S3 storage with Cloudian HyperStore for a web deployed application. I mainly use Cloudian HyperStore for web applications.

What is most valuable?

The best features Cloudian HyperStore offers in my experience are versioning, replication, and erasure coding.

Versioning has made the biggest difference for my team because fault tolerance has improved with versioning. If any uneventful or unintended delete happens, I have the ability to recover it without going into the backup.

Cloudian HyperStore has positively impacted my organization by reducing costs, which is one of the biggest advantages I can see from Cloudian HyperStore. If I compare it with block and NAS storage, I actually get very decent performance in S3 storage while getting the storage at an extremely cheaper rate compared to other block storage or file storage options.

What needs improvement?

Cloudian HyperStore can be improved by making upgrades easier. Currently, I see that upgrades are very complicated, and most of the time I require Cloudian support whenever I want to upgrade. I think Cloudian has the opportunity to improve in self-service capabilities. If they make upgrades less vendor-dependent, that would be beneficial.

I would also like to add that more automation APIs would be valuable. If more APIs were available for S3 compatible tasks, that would be great.

I rate the product eight because if they make updates easier, make firmware upgrades easier, make compaction available on CMC instead of requiring scripts, make node cleanup straightforward, make forecasting simple, make capacity planning easy, and provide self-healing opportunities, I believe the rating would be a ten.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Cloudian HyperStore for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Cloudian HyperStore is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Cloudian HyperStore's scalability is not as good as I wanted it to be because if I want to add anything new to the current environment, the process is extremely lengthy and takes a lot of time. Scalability can be a challenge from time to time.

How are customer service and support?

Customer support is very good, especially during United States hours. If it is any other country's time zone, things can be a bit challenging.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using Amazon S3, but we switched because we wanted an on-premises solution rather than a public cloud.

What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on investment with Cloudian HyperStore. The return on investment is present, although I do not have the metrics, so I cannot share specific details.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing was good, although I was not a part of the licensing, product cost, and deployment discussions. From what I have heard, it has been good.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing Cloudian HyperStore, we evaluated MinIO and Dell ECS before settling on Cloudian HyperStore.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to others looking into using Cloudian HyperStore is to do rigorous testing in your environment, and if the solution fits your needs, pursue it.

Cloudian HyperStore is a good product with scopes of improvement, and if Cloudian can actually work on the inputs provided to them from time to time, it is going to be a very strong S3 product. I gave this product a rating of eight out of ten.

Struggled to maintain reliable immutable backups and have faced ongoing performance issues

  • December 09, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

My main use case for Cloudian HyperStore is for immutable backup storage.

I use Cloudian HyperStore for immutable backup storage by backing up using standard on-premises storage solutions, and then I backup copy those backups to the immutable storage as a way to archive that data.

I do not have anything else to add about my use case with Cloudian HyperStore that is unique about how my team approaches it.

What is most valuable?

Cloudian HyperStore's best features include using the S3 storage for things such as S3 FUSE to connect to our IaaS environment and give customers a STaaS option for S3 storage as well.

Cloudian HyperStore has not positively impacted my organization in terms of improvements, efficiencies, or outcomes that I have seen.

What needs improvement?

Cloudian HyperStore can be improved by replacing the Cassandra database since it seems to struggle.

I would add that the documentation for Cloudian HyperStore is good, as they have it built into Cloudian itself, but I think the support struggles in an enterprise environment.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Cloudian HyperStore for around two or three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Cloudian HyperStore is stable in specific use cases, but in my use case, it is not.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I found that the performance of Cloudian HyperStore suffers at scale, where the Cassandra database struggles to keep up with bulk deletes and bulk requests.

Cloudian HyperStore can scale if one has the right use case.

How are customer service and support?

Cloudian HyperStore's customer support is poor.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have not previously used a different solution; this is my first solution, but I will be moving off it soon.

What was our ROI?

I cannot share any specific metrics regarding return on investment for Cloudian HyperStore, but I can say that the return on investment is struggling. The initial cost has not been recouped because of performance issues, leading to a lack of customer trust with this product, as I cannot sell it quickly enough before the new licensing costs hit, resulting in losing money by the end.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing for Cloudian HyperStore indicates that it is a cheap product, and the licenses are cheap as well. When comparing them to other competitors for actual hardware, it is the cheaper option. If one had a use case for a small cluster for S3, it would be a good solution, but I think solutions such as Wasabi are perhaps the better option for smaller deployments. Overall, it is still cheap.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing Cloudian HyperStore, I reviewed other options such as Scality at the time.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for others looking into using Cloudian HyperStore is to consider it a good product to add to their portfolio, as long as they fully understand the drawbacks of things such as using the Cassandra database. If one plans to use a particularly talkative backup product or a product that will utilize S3 in a way with multiple single-paste commands at scale, I think it will struggle. However, if one uses Cloudian HyperStore on performant hardware and a performant network, it could probably shine in certain use cases.

My additional thoughts about Cloudian HyperStore are that you definitely need to research the best use cases for S3 and understand the product behind the scenes, rather than just seeing the S3 up front and believing that it is all the same as an AWS S3 solution. It is crucial to comprehend the hardware you are buying and the database behind the scenes that serves all your metadata and manages your tokens, which also needs to be performant. For instance, Veeam backups might not work well, but if you use Cloudian HyperStore for AI-type solutions, then it could work well.

I rate this product a 3 out of 10.

Private cloud has met enterprise S3 needs and supports autonomous data center operations

  • December 03, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

My main use case for Cloudian HyperStore was a private cloud in a data center which was restricted from the internet, so I needed S3 storage and an S3 storage solution which could work autonomously in the data center.

What is most valuable?

Cloudian HyperStore offers excellent documentation and clear diagrams, and the application itself has a user-friendly interface which was beneficial for managing resources. We used some of our compute resources and storage resources for Cloudian, and it worked effectively. We made backups and established S3 connection from Kubernetes resources. We managed our problem disks, and sometimes we replaced disks, and Cloudian provided clear instructions on what to do with the replacements.

My experience with the UI involved common administrative tasks such as disk replacement, providing volume, changing volume, and providing S3 bucket.

Cloudian HyperStore impacted my organization positively because we started to use it at least eight years ago, and at that time, we did not have many choices on the market, and I do not recall a truly good enterprise solution for using S3 storage in a private data center. Cloudian HyperStore has many years of experience on the market, so it should be a strong option.

What needs improvement?

I cannot provide current feedback on needed improvements because for the last four years, I did not use Cloudian HyperStore, so my experience may be outdated regarding recent changes. Everything was excellent, and I had a truly good experience, which I can confirm for any other architects who are going to use Cloudian HyperStore.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working in my current field for four years at this place.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Cloudian HyperStore is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Regarding Cloudian HyperStore's scalability, we had 200 physical servers with many disks inside.

How are customer service and support?

I had a good experience with customer support because we had several calls, and I can evaluate that the support interactions were of high quality.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I did not switch to a different solution before Cloudian HyperStore, and I did not use any other solution in the private cloud. I had some good experience with Amazon and Google Cloud after that, but this is not a switch as I had left the company. I believe they still use Cloudian HyperStore.

What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on investment because we covered our requirements. We really needed S3 storage at an enterprise level, so we solved it.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing Cloudian HyperStore, I did not evaluate other options, but I should refresh my knowledge about the current situation on the market because for the last five years, many other enterprise solutions have become available.

What other advice do I have?

I can advise others looking into using Cloudian HyperStore as a strong enterprise solution with many years of experience on the market, and I cannot compare it with other solutions for private data centers. I can compare it with cloud solutions such as S3 Amazon or Google Cloud, but I think it is different because you do not need to manage your resources with those providers. I would definitely advise Cloudian HyperStore for private clouds. I gave this product a rating of 9 out of 10.

Offers robust data protection with secure individual data management and effective lifecycle control

  • April 03, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for Cloudian HyperStore is as a backup target. We use it for backup and archive use cases and are moving towards artificial intelligence or GPU business applications. However, about eighty percent of its use is for backup. It is also used for sharing data across organizations, offering scalability and secure data sharing across multiple locations.

How has it helped my organization?

Normally we needed to recover files from the backup, what is a bit lengty in time, but now with versions and retentions, it is easy to recover files.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable aspects of Cloudian HyperStore include its ability to manage data individually, unlike traditional storage solutions. I can determine what to do with a single file by utilizing features like versions and retentions versus all files in the same volume are handled the same by the snapshot schedule and volume settings . Another beneficial feature is data tearing allowing movement across platforms. The immutable object lock feature ensures that data remains secure by preventing unauthorized changes. If data is tampered with, reverting back to a previous version is easy, eliminating any issues. Lastly, Cloudian HyperStore's data durability is a key aspect, focusing on the data lifecycle. I can control data activity, duration, and location-based storage policies for robust data protection.

What needs improvement?

Software vendors need to make their solutions more intelligent enabling tagging and automated data management decisions regarding the S3 place. As the backup applications already hand over SLAs settings from the backup setup to the objects, the data life cycle is automatically managed with versions, locations, and retentions. General applications conversing with S3 lack built-in intelligence, so more development is necessary on the alliance's part. Cloudian HyperStore is already very sophisticated, and no changes are needed as it is ahead of market need.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Cloudian HyperStore for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Cloudian HyperStore is one hundred percent stable. I have never had an outage on a system.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Cloudian HyperStore is scalable and supports the sharing of data across multiple locations, applications and can scale independently per cluster, location and support mixed configurations.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is generally great. Cloudian used to offer one level of support, which was very hands-on. They now have tiered support options to accommodate different customer needs. The support plus option provides a high level of assistance, including direct second-line support. While first-line support can be a bit inefficient due to repeated basic checks, second-line support is knowledgeable and provides open, transparent communication and help.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Apart from Cloudian HyperStore, I have worked with object storage solutions such as Dell and Wasabi. Each has its strengths, but in terms of handling a real S3 layer, only Cloudian HyperStore, AWS, and Microsoft handle this effectively.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Cloudian HyperStore can be a bit complex because it involves setting up a worldwide network topology configuration even for a single location. However, with professional services, it becomes easier. My company developed an installer guide that allows us to complete setup in thirty minutes, and we have automated many manual tasks.

What was our ROI?

Customers see a high ROI when they move inactive data from their primary storage systems onto Cloudian. In comparison to AWS, within fourteen months, the CAPEX investment pays off due to Cloudian's pricing model. Customers often found that within thirteen to 18 month months, Cloudian HyperStore was cheaper than AWS.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Cloudian HyperStore offers reasonable pricing. It provides a comprehensive package that is cheaper compared to AWS. When compared with non-real S3 solutions, it may seem more expensive, but it delivers many additional features. While most S3 vendors provide only basic functionalities, Cloudian HyperStore enable real distributed capabilities and delivers support for ninety out of one hundred ten APIs, AWS is using, making it a cost-effective solution.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes. I have worked with Dells, Wasabi, and tried the startup Object First, but Cloudian HyperStore stands out as it provides a real S3 solution compared to others that function more as S3 gateway solutions and missing a lot of the API's.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Cloudian HyperStore, especially for software developers and DevOps companies, as they can leverage the rich functionalities offered by AWS but now onpremise with Cloudian. My advice is, therefore, to consider Cloudian HyperStore for those not just looking for an immutable backup target. As the whole architecture is designed for MSP's with multi tenancy, real QoS and a high level of security I would rate it a 9.
