Cognos Analytics offers flexibility in reporting and dashboards

challenges relates to data cannot always be addressed with the tool
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Financial analysis, clinical productivity, research metrics and other mission based reporting. Executive dashboards have increased transparency.
Refreshed Cognos experience for Analytical users
What do you like best about the product?
Refreshed interface, Dashboard interface, improved visualizations, ease of use for non technical users.

What do you dislike about the product?
Old Admin Console (within Cognos connection), Configuration dialog is out of date. The interface is sluggish at times and struggles to load content when the count is more than 20. For example: If a particular folder has 50 reports, it takes a while to load the content vs a folder with 5 reports. Mobile is app is very unfriendly on ipads thereby making users rely on native browsers such as ipad which deters users from using Cognos on Mobile devices.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Dashboards are very easy to compile when compared to earlier versions of Cognos (10.x and 8.x). User adaptability and user training is much easier due to friendly interface. The improved analytical capabilities have improved the business perception towards Cognos as a reporting tool.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Cognos has greatly evolved in the past 2-3 years and is on the path to modernize the Analytical reporting. Greatly recommended if looking for the next age BI solutions.

Some steps/actions are not intuitive like "going back" to close a report or visualization back to the next step, i end up closing out my session.

Build your data to be tool agnostic and have CA in your arsenal for reporting and data discovery

Great out of box capabilities for data visualizations. Leveraging these features makes for great intuitive dashboard interfaces.

Would like to be able to include the ability for additional styling and custom coded components.

stable consistent platform that can compensate for poorly modeled data

Looking forward to 11.1, but for now we are way behind the competition. Self-Service has gone backwards due to a need to have Administrative rights for datasources. Needs to have the focus on product development.

It has become the system of record reporting and lost anaytics and dashboards to tableau

Inability to find quality training on a budget.

Quick dashboards have helped us build better models. By showing the users proof of concepts by using the excel upload feature the model build time has been reduced.
