CAD that's Always There

  • October 17, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like most the fact that I no longer have to carry around a second laptop just for CAD and that the projects are always up to date, no matter where I log in from. I'm a Linux user and have been looking for an alternative to SolidWorks for a long time, and then, finally, I found OnShape, that runs in the _browser_ to boot!
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes there are long loading times, particularly when dealing with project having a lot of tiny surface components (such as those exported from many PCB CAD packages). Also, too short timeout for a session. Many times per day I come back to my laptop after a meeting or lunch and see that the session has expired.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Keeping track of versions of projects is much easier with OnShape. Sending a "view only" link to customers and other parts of a project is awesome!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you do not need the fancier simulation stuff in SolidWorks and your organisation permits: please do try OnShape!

Future of CAD

  • October 16, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The benefits that you would expect from cloud based platform - no file control or version management and the ability to work collaboratively. It is very easy to add new users without worrying about PDM and additional IT work. When comparing to other CAD platforms, the low price of OnShape made it an easy choice for us.
What do you dislike about the product?
Configurations (as in SolidWorks) have not been added yet, this is the most important missing feature for our organization. 3D sketching is another large missing feature. I also wish the UI was more customizable, and allowed different background colors to be set. Coloring of individual faces is another important feature that is currently missing. However every three weeks or less new features are being added, and I am confident the needed functionality will be available soon.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
OnShape allows us to add new or part-time users at a very affordable cost, which is critical for our start-up organization. Unlike SolidWorks where $5k+ licenses plus subscriptions have to be purchased (not to mention expensive stand-alone PDM software), in OnShape there is only a subscription fee. Since it is cloud based new users can get started immediately, and there is a lot of high quality training material available. Computers also do not need to be expensive workstations to run OnShape.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take a professional trial and see how Onshape fits into your workflow. There are some differences that take some getting used to, but they quickly become appreciated and intuitive.

Reviewing the training materials, or taking a course can really help accelerate your switch.

Onshape makes cloud CAD reality

  • October 16, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Being in a manufacturing setting, having the ability to model from my phone on the production floor is huge. I can work on my CAD anywhere I need on any device. I know that is Onshape's tagline, but it is true and it is liberating. Onshape adds new features every three weeks, so it is improving all the time. Onshape's mating system is very unique and makes mating assemblies so much easier. Onshape also has Featurescript which allows users to build custom features. I love that about Onshape.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are still some pretty major feature functions missing at this time. Onshape does not yet have a weldment feature, although there is a featurescript for one until they create a native feature. Although I really like the mating system, it does have a slight learning curve. Mate connectors are used to connect parts together and they are great, but I do find myself creating many custom mate connectors, which can be a bit tedious.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onshape is so easy to get started with. We use several interns which means lots of changeover. With Onshape, we very easily transition between interns. We also easily share CAD information with other departments to update projects we are working on.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Pick a project and try it using Onshape. Try out their features and see if it will benefit your company

Easy to use, affordable software with frequent updates

  • October 14, 2017

What do you like best about the product?
After using solidworks it was very easy to spin up on and start using instantly. There are some innovative software features, such as the new mating methods for assemblies which make designs and iterations a lot faster. The version control functionality which lets you see and revert to design changes over time is also very useful and easy to use! Finally, the functionality which allows me to send someone without a license a link to allow them to review a design from their browser has been very useful for collaboration! I haven't used many of their other collaboration features, but think they will be very useful as we grow.

Customer support has also been great the few times I've needed to ask questions.
What do you dislike about the product?
Didn't know that I could change the function of mouse inputs (left click, right click, scroll, etc) until the training. I've seen a few people decide not to use the software because they wanted to use the inputs they were used to in previous CAD systems - so good to be aware that there ARE setting which let you change this!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are designing novel wind turbine technologies. For the most part so far we have used it to develop simple parts that can be fed into a CFD simulation to view how different architectures work in various wind conditions. Onshape works well with SimScale CFD software and it has been a nice pairing.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Highly recommend - especially if you are working on projects which require a lot of collaboration. Take the training at the beginning - it was pretty easy and succinctly demonstrated the features that help Onshape stand out from other programs.

What do you like best about the product?
The cloud storage and in browser modeling makes using the software anywhere a breeze.
What do you dislike about the product?
Complex Drawings and assemblies can lead to long load times.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Fast drawing and modeling for creating prototypes.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give it a try the trial accounts offer a lot.

Not useful

  • October 13, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Technically appealing, looks useful for many industrial tasks.
What do you dislike about the product?
Students (of design, engineering, architecture, for example) have no way to access the basics so they can learn to use the tools.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As long as beginners can't access OnShape, there's nothing that can be done with it in the long run.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Don't switch until you find a way for students to plug into to the tools

Great cloud CAD platform

  • October 13, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The best part is the ease of organization of all the documents, as well as versioning features. It is also super easy to create assemblies built off of well designed part studios all at once.
What do you dislike about the product?
It would be better if onshape had an offline working feature when theres no WIFI or a bad connection.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The benefit is having all the documents accessible by everyone at the company, and you can work on the document whenever you want without checking it in or out. It is also fast to work together, and build complex parts.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Great CAD if you don't want anything to download, nothing to store on your own computer. Everything is backed up online and is operated through your browser. Much easier organization-wise compared to something like solidworks, where you need to check in and check out parts and the organization is a bit more complicated.

Cloud features awesome, modeling tools well underway.

  • October 13, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I love that I never lose data and i can access it from any device with an internet connection. I also really love that despite the limited functionality, they release new features every three weeks. I really think that in time Onshape is going to be a game changer.
What do you dislike about the product?
I struggle sometimes with the functionality. Drawings have been especially difficult, but it's getting better.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It has really made modeling as a team almost effortless, with everyone's models clearly laid out and organized, all changes updated everywhere constantly.

Excellent value

  • October 13, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It was easy to pick up coming from a SolidWorks background. It has all the functionality I need for my small business, and even some features I didn't expect, like the mobile app.
What do you dislike about the product?
There have occasionally been things I wanted to do that didn't seem possible. I don't have a specific example in mind, but I've always either found a work-around, found help, or the feature became available in a later update.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're able to bring products from the initial concept stage all the way to production with OnShape.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you come from SolidWorks you'll pick it up fast. I'd recommend anyone try the free trial at least.
