review title
What do you like best about the product?
No hardware requirements, no software management
What do you dislike about the product?
Frequent missing functions that prevent sometimes simple operations. Also there are issues of performance where the response form onshape is essentially "you're using it wrong". We understand how the product is intended to be used, but this often becomes limiting to us.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
File management is improved, with no redundant copies or local copies.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
make sure you can deal with missing features that you wont know are missing
Excellent 3d CAD experience
What do you like best about the product?
The monthly subscription model is perfect for me. Each time I sign on to OnShape, the latest version of the software is used. All of my models are available any time I have Internet available. I do not need any special hardware since all of the computing is performed on OnShape's computers.
What do you dislike about the product?
The unavailability of threaded profiles other than standard fasteners is a bit frustrating. Import of some other CAD files is sometimes incomplete - the instructions for importing some file types is incomplete.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I have been able to create models of my parts and make drawings and exports to other formats with limited resources. The subscription model really works for an individual engineer who needs CAD.
Moving to the next stage with Onshape
What do you like best about the product?
Access to up to date software on any platform including mobile. Ability to share design easily with colleagues anywhere. Rapidly improving software based on user feedback. Constraints system built around simulation not an add on.
What do you dislike about the product?
Drawings package still maturing. Mobile lags behind desktop in a number of key areas particularly with lack of 2d drawings. I think also the iPad and Apple Pencil offer an opportunity to rethink the way 3d design can be done. At the moment it basically mimics the desktop workflow.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
With Onshape I am able to give clients instant access to the latest model and drawings. They can see in real time how a job is progressing and give feedback immediately if it is required. Saving time and wasted work. Easy to do presentations using a mobile device. Access to all design information in one place including design calculations.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Although lacking in some features present in more mature products it has sufficient functionality to operate as primary system. Minor learning curve from other parametric packages so minimal drop in productivity.
Like a snowball that just gets bigger and better
What do you like best about the product?
Onshape is easy to wrap your head around, the interface is clean, sharp but best of all its intuitive. The manual is easy to access, but I dont find I need to use it much. The training available and the webinars make it easy.
What do you dislike about the product?
Although progressing rapidly there are simple things that haven't yet found their way into the product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I spend a lot less time thinking about how to do something in the cad system and a lot more time designing the product. Some of the new additions such as in-context assembly make it so easy to develop your ideas and make changes on the fly. I also find my customers like being sent a link they can use to view the model without big downloads and high powered computers required to view.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take a trial, you wont regret it. Onshape is familiar but fresh at the same time. As someone who has used Onshape for a couple of years, I'm astounded by how quickly they have added features and the process requires nothing from me. Open the browser and its all there, with upgrades pretty much every 2-3 weeks.
This is the future of CAD.
What do you like best about the product?
I like the fact that it is Cloud-based so I can access my files form any computer. I also like the fact that I don't get an annual update but a regular, monthly improvement which is instantly available without having to load new software. I also like the fact that I'm not paying for Support that I don't use. Help is always at hand and sharing files is very easy and secure. Really like the sheet metal side of Onshape. Much more intuitive than other software I've used.
What do you dislike about the product?
The commands are not quite all there at present but are being continually improved and updated. There is sometimes a lag while a file loads but that's just something to get used to. At least you don't lose work as it doesn't crash!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Sharing files with clients is easy and means that you don't have to save umpteen different versions.

Transition to Onshape
What do you like best about the product?
In transitioning over to Onshape we have immediately noticed the benefit of cloud based CAD. As a team of 4 individuals with a subscription, we are able to collaborate on design and most importantly, we now have a common location for saving our designs and drawings. Previous to this, information was spread across different machines creating a disjointed document management system.
What do you dislike about the product?
The one limiting factor of a cloud based CAD system is the need for internet access. On the odd occasion, I have been unable to access drawings due to being on site with no internet. The workaround us to print to PDF a copy of the drawings and save locally on my computer.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are standardising on system design. This alleviates the need to design the same things more than once. This will lead to time savings on design. The ability to access information on a smart phone has proved to be an unexpected benefit. We have been able to share design information with the client when on site in locations where it would not be possible to set up a computer.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is worth trialling on a 1 year subscription. We had some slight concerns due to some features not being available at the time of signing up, but with the regular product updates these features have now been added.
A Big Jump Into The Future of Parametric Design
What do you like best about the product?
Its cloud architecture and collaboration model. Onshape's approach is obviously the future and has clear, critical advantages over SolidWorks. Being able to collaborate on a live project from any platform, including my phone and my iPad, or any computer in the office is amazing. Remotely discussing a design in progress while the designer works on the model and provides a tour of her work, is unique and a fundamental advance.
What do you dislike about the product?
Mating, and sheet metal limitations. The innovative work the Onshape team is taking to mating and sheet metal is both exciting and somewhat frustrating. I support their approach, but I'd like them to realize their complete vision as soon as possible. Int he meantime, sheet metal, in particular, cannot support some of our projects.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Sharing designs with clients, remote collaboration, and sharing 3D designs with non-design staff. Onshape is the kind of platform that you can find a new use for every day. To tour a design live with a client during a video conference is the most effective communication tool we've found. Then to provide the client access to their design revisions in full 3D interactive detail has been extremely well-received by our clients.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Definitely give Onshape a look. Build a complete test project on the platform and talk to the Onshape team about your experience. The benefits of the platform generally outweigh any near-term missing features.
OnShape after about 6 months of use
What do you like best about the product?
I really like the fact that OnShape and my files are accessible from anywhere - home, mobile, my main computer or the computers at various workstations in our pilot plant and manufacturing areas.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is some functionality that is still not available in OnShape that is available in SolidWorks, but it keeps getting closer!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Sharing files with clients and vendors is really easy and we always know that we're looking at the same thing.
OnShape makes leading edge 3D cad available to the masses.
What do you like best about the product?
The online processing is one of the best features. This allows you to work from multiple locations on multiple devices and it also allows you to show customers drawings without them having any software.
The price (if you chose a pro subscription) is less than the maintenance fee for other leading edge packages without the up front cost.
No backups required.
No saving of files because everything gets saved.
You can use one seat license if you want since no installation on a machine is required. Multiple people can use the same license at different times from their own machine.
The large quantity and ease of access to training is outstanding.
The frequent updates which add surprising numbers of features is impressive.
If you submit a ticket for a change or feature, you are not only very likely to get it but they tell you when it is available! Try getting that from anywhere else on the planet!
Upgrades are all seamless, invisible, and free.
The list of pluses goes on and one with this package.

What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the rendering is slow, I suppose depending on the load at the server at the time. But "slow" meaning 15 seconds, not 10 minutes. Most of the time it is quite fast.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I was previously using 2D cad because I could not afford to purchase Solid Works for 7K plus maintenance fee each year. That wasn't an option. When I really needed 3d rendering I was using Sketchup which is absolutely junk compared to this. I tried the 360 product from Autocad for awhile until my free trial ran out and was not impressed at all. It is not nearly as easy to use as Onshape.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
You can use the free version which has just about all the features of a pro subscription sans some security features. Even the basic training is free and you can find lots of training on YouTube also.
Extremely versatile and always available
What do you like best about the product?
Browser CAD allows me to make a drawing anywhere I have WiFi and doesn't load my computer down with extra stuff.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing!! I am continuing to find new things and I love them all.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Design. Drawing creation is so user-friendly that I find myself closing Autocad and opening Onshape to make a document.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Definitely consider this as an alternative to your ACAD, Fusion, Inventor or Solidworks. I've used them all and this is fast and convenient.
