OnShape for Startups
What do you like best about the product?
OnShape has exceptional sharing and revision tracking capabilities which are very handy in the fast paced startup environment.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not being able to work without internet is an issue occasionally.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Currently prototyping and early development of our product. Ease of sharing with outside engineers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give the free trial a go, and make sure to take some training so that you get full understanding of the capabilities and how they are intended to work. It's a different paradigm.
Awesome CAD and mobile to boot
What do you like best about the product?
We are an installer of cloud connected robotic cells in manufacturing. One of our challenges is our team is always going here and there so we needed a platform that could go with us. One of the features that amazes our customers is when we open their assembly cell on our mobile devices and use the model when we are doing design reviews or in the field installing it
What do you dislike about the product?
The only issue we ever really have is you need an internet connection to work in or even view the model. However, it’s rare that we don’t have that connection so definitely not a major obstacle.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The ability to work on the model in a collaborative fashion has been awesome as we have added more engineers to the team. The fact that we can throw as many engineers into the model as we need to accomplish the mission has been a great advantage. The built-in PDM system is very easy to use and allows us to keep each of the engineers working on specific features in their area of the model and then merge all of the changes back together and keep track of who made what changes and when
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Making the decision to start our company on OnShape has been a great decision. It’s allowed us to do things that would have been cost prohibitive with competitive products. As we have started to rapidly expand our engineering team getting new engineers up to speed on the software has been amazingly simple with most being productive within their first couple of days on the system.
CAD for everyone
What do you like best about the product?
No install, works on nearly any computer, phone or tablet
What do you dislike about the product?
That the system is not quite mature yet. Things like weldments are a necessity for me
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
File management and sharing. Collaboration in Onshape is second to none
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is perfect for mechanical modeling however if you need to do curvy stuff or weldments maybe wait a bit until the product matures
agile program for agile companies
What do you like best about the product?
- online collaboration
- easy to learn
- powerful tools for modeling
- floating license

What do you dislike about the product?
- mating parts need some getting used to... it's quite different than Solidworks and at first I wasn't sure if I liked that workflow better. Now I love it
- You need a workaround to customize the width of lines in the plans.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
not being stuck with a license per computer and no license server to install.
online collaboration on project works really well within the team

Positive but needs improvements
What do you like best about the product?
The comments feature is terrific. The days of screen shots in a word doc are over.
What do you dislike about the product?
Assembling things in space are difficult. Not having planes in assemblies makes it a challenge.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Having the branches makes it easier to work with my co-workers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Some headaches early on learning the assembly features, versioning process, and limited drawing package. But in general it's pretty good. Great for collaborating.
Contract engineer using onshape for all design work.
What do you like best about the product?
In context modeling, simplified interface, collaboration ability
What do you dislike about the product?
surfacing is not super intuitive coming from SW, No knit feature to combine surfaces... that I know of.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I like the lower cost and level of support. Have had great experience receiving help / guidance on technical + modeling issues.
The next thing in CAD
What do you like best about the product?
Cloud CAD, real collaboration. All the things that Solidworks should have but doesn't. Never crashing or saving. Price
What do you dislike about the product?
Its not quite there yet, sure you can use it now but there a few things missing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Design of new projects.
Price efficient software
What do you like best about the product?
Purely on price it is perfectly compatible to SolidWorks, for a small business i would purchase Onshape over SolidWorks
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't like some of the features i think they are easier to use in SolidWorks. I really don't like sheet metal in Onshape
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Manufacturing Components. 3D visualization rules out errors in the factory shop
Excellent CAD tool!
What do you like best about the product?
The interface is snappy, much more than I would expect, especially given that it's online.
What do you dislike about the product?
I wish importing images or drawing to trace was a bit easier.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm able to construct and sketch out designs virtually anywhere, including my phone.
Enclosure modification experience
What do you like best about the product?
Ability to make measurements in .STL files.
Generating solidwork files which can be worked on in Solidworks software - this enabled sharing with collaborators.
Generating solidwork files which can be worked on in Solidworks software - this enabled sharing with collaborators.
What do you dislike about the product?
Inability to edit an imported solidworks file generated in Solidworks. I wanted to modify parts drawn by a partner in Solidworks, and was unable to. This would be a very good feature to have, if possible
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Creating and modifying enclosures for circuit boards for technology capability demonstrations. Having onshape enabled us to iterate through designing, 3D printing, and getting feedback quickly in the matter of 1 or 2 days.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If flexibility and adaptability to uncertainties, ease of use, and portability is important to you, Onshape is a great choice. I love that the platform is cloud-based and requires no special maintenance. As a part of a fast-moving organization, I am happy to that we have chosen Onshape.
